I cannot now remember the year that Charlie died, sometime around 84 or 85, only that it was far too early for him to leave us and that it was also far too long ago. There is rarely a day that goes by that I do not still think of him.
During his years at East Chambers, Charlie had it all. He was a gifted athlete in both football and track, he was an extraordinary performer on stage - both acting and singing, he was able to charm almost anyone into anything (a talent that got us out of more than a few iffy situations), and he was a friend to everybody.
I have lived my life with too few heroes, but Charlie was one of my earliest. For a reason I have yet to figure out, he and I were also best friends. Compared to him, I brought little to the table. I have to admit that there were many times I would have loved to have been him. It was enough, however, to be the sidekick. He was the golden boy. Except when it came to academics...there he was more like the bronze boy, but that was also part of his charm.
After I graduated, I lost touch with Charlie. We maybe saw one another once or twice in the years that followed before his death. I had wrapped myself in my new world and he had also in his. It is one of the largest regrets of my life that I did not do more. Now all I can do is affirm that he is truly missed.
