What did you do after leaving BHS?

I played 8th grade and JV football at Baker. In 1959 my stepfather was transferred to Germany where I attended both Hanau Junior High and Frankfurt American High School. I played football at Frankfurt and graduated in 1962. I returned to the US during the summer of 1962 and attended Georgia Tech on an academic scholarsip and was a walk-on for the Tech Freshman football team. I only practiced for a week when I saw the handwriting on the wall and quit. Realizing that I did not want to be an Aerospace Engineer, I left Tech and completed my fresman year at the University of South Carolina. Upon my step-dad's return to the States I transferred to Jacksonville State University and and received my BA and a U.S Army commission in January 1967. I was commissioned into the Field Artillery and after having served tours in Korea, Holland, Vietnam, Germany(3), and the Pentagon, I retired with the rank of full colonel in 1993. After a year of helping my wife recover from breast cancer surgery, I returned to graduate school and received my masters degree in education with a specialty in History. I subsequently taught eleven years in the Alabama public school system in Jacksonville and Cullman, Alabama. I also coached the boys soccer team and won the 2002 5A Boys State Championship. I retired again and my wife and I built a house and settled down in the old Fort McClellan in Anniston. I have been teaching History part-time in a private school in Anniston for the last four years and coaching the girls soccer team. My hobbies are collecting antiques, reading, photography and golf, and of course, spoiling my granddaughters.

Favorite School Stories:

As I was walking to the football field for JV practice one afternoon, Coach Wolf, called me over to where the varsity was practicing. It just happened that the second string varsity quarterback was out that day and they were running the second string offense against the first string defense. He wanted me to quarterback the second string offense. Well the two middle-line backers happened to be Klaus Duncan (my brother) and his best buddy Erwin Teague. Needless to say they took pleasure in destroying me. I am proud of a block I threw on Harry Medley which took him out on a sweep we ran. Coach Wolf soon realized that I was being punished enough and released me to go and practice with the JV.

Dream Vacation?

Alaska

Biggest Regret while at Baker?

I have no regrets. I only wish that I could have stayed at Baker but since so many of us came from military families that was almost impossible.
