Susan Straight-Bottaro

Susan (Straight) Bottaro, 79, died peacefully at home on October 23, holding her husband's hand and listening to her favorite music. She and Ron had recently celebrated fifty years of marriage. She was in hospice care the last few days, following weeks of attentive care from her husband. Sue was born January 19, 1944 in Manchester, New Hampshire. The family soon moved to Connecticut, and she graduated from Manchester High School in 1962. She studied at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston from 1963-1965. Disliking New England winters, she and Ron moved to Florida in 1977, settling eventually in Port Orange. A lifelong painter, Sue participated in gallery and outdoor shows throughout central Florida. She was a board member of the Art League of Daytona Beach and a longtime member of Beaux Arts of Central Florida. Sue taught watercolor classes at the Artists' Workshop in New Smyrna Beach and at the Art League of Daytona Beach. She loved plein air painting and could often be seen painting with friends around the Daytona Beach area. When in Italy she painted in a piazza, and a nearby restaurant owner happily bought the watercolor right off her easel. In later years she studied acrylics with Rose Ann and Fred Samuelson, but her passion was always watercolors. She received more than 100 awards and was the poster artist for the Halifax Art Show in Daytona Beach in 2007. She leaves behind her husband, her brother Steve Straight and his wife Marian Maccarone of South Windsor, CT, her sisters-in-law Rosemary Helveston of East Haddam, CT and Barbara Rice of East Windsor, CT and her beloved cats, Lacey and Lucy. She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Pauline Straight of Manchester, CT, and her brother-in-law, Joseph Bottaro. In lieu of funeral services, donations can be made to your local animal shelter.

Susan lived up the street from me - since we didn't have a TV when I was in Jr High- I would go up there to watch Elvis on The Ed Sullivan Show.  We hung around through Jr High- but in High School we were involved in different things.
