I believe that forth from left is Diane Dearington! Checked with my SOMANIS and she was  a Round Table girl. Can I still say girl?

Thank you!  That's exactly who it is.  I haven't lived in Manchester since I graduated from college.  Unfortunately, California is a bit of a distance to go for a reunion.  I did make it for the 50th though, and that was great fun!  I saw people I hadn't seen in 50 years.

I just read Peggy Jeffries bio in honor of her upcoming birthday. I saw that she went to nursing school. How wonderful that so many of our classmates did so. Future nurses club really did it’s job. Thanks to all of you that did!

Well, Manchester High School has retired the mascot  "Indians."  Here is a link to the efforts of MHS students to change to the "Red Hawks."  I, for one, am proud of the kids for engaging in this effort.

https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/manchester-high-school-considers-changing-mascot/140533/

Those of us who know a bit about birds might quibble that the bird is more properly known as the "Red Tailed Hawk," and has the unfortunate nickname of "Chicken Hawk."  (The California species is the Red Shoudered Hawk.)

Thanks, Philip

That is great news, the students are aware enough to want to help start a change in how MHS respects cultures. I like the comment in the clip. To not remove the past but to move on. I am proud of the students that have taken the initiative. YAHOO! Beautiful Hawk.

I'm glad they changed the mascot. It would have offended me if, for example, the mascot had been the "Estonians" (my heritage).  Or the "Germans" or the "Russians " or any other nationality or ethnicity, or worse, some ethnic slur like Redskins or Kikes or Dagos or ... well, you know worse ones. Another common one that puzzles me is "Tojans". They lost, didn't they?

Maybe they were talking about condoms.

I recently learned that the Manchester Historical Society scanned entire copies of the Herald.  It is possible to read both headlines for every date and see the Friday "High School World" issues.  Jerry Conklin's name appears frequently in the sports column--a tennis ace!  Check out the issues from 1956 and 1957 when the "new" MHS opened.  Barely a mention of us 7th and 8th graders; we were too insignificant to merit notice. Here is a link: http://www.manchesterhistory.org/News/NEWS_1962.htm

Hi, All, Great reading all your stories!

Recognize many of my fellow Round Tablers...Tom Best (best man for my wedding!), Phil Rice, Doug Pierson, Dick Harvey... but where the heck am I? And I don't see the other member of our intrepid high school trio w Tom and me-Dennis Podolny. Dennis was the one who got us started doing Gilbert & Sullivan trios...anyone remember our fun romp at assembly, singing/playing the 3 love-sick guys prancing around in robes masquerading as women to get into a nunnery? :-) I remember the 3 of us singing an accapella trio for Mr. Hunt's English class... Jerry

PS: Happy Birthday, Georgie! (Georgeanne Minder)

I was thinking about the Phinney-Hunt tours. I never got to go, but would have loved that experience. Did anyone out there ever go?  How many were on each trip and do you remember the cost?

12/07/23 11:18 AM #125

George E Landis

Yes, Bob, I was lucky enough to go on  a Phinney-Hunt tour.  I beleve there were abouit 15 of us, and

we traveled in 3 station wagons.  I have no idea what the cost was all those years ago, but it was a

very memorable experience.  I still have my slides from that adventure.

Thanks for the post George. Very envious of your experience. I have a couple of other questions, if you don't mind. Were there any other adults in that group?  How long were you traveling for and what were some of the highlights?

12/09/23 02:25 PM #127

George E Landis

There were 3 adult driver.  Gil Hunt, Phinney and a 3rd teacher whose name I cannot recall.

We went from coast to coast.  Some of the highlights were Devils's Tower, and many of the other high points.

Wish I could recall them all, but after all, it was more than 60 years ago.

Hi Class! This message is from Robert Nowicki.

I would like the class know that I have donated my copy of the 1958 Gateway to the Manchester Historical Society. If any one wishes to view it on line, they could go to there website and call it up. They also have the 1962 SOMANHIS if anyone lost theirs. Could you post this info on our sight please. Enjoy!

My CPAP machine took a dive this week so Dale had to take me to the local office of Regional Home Care in Rocky Hill Friday afternoon. The lady there turned out to be Fred O'Dell's Daughter in Law Lynn! What a great gal! She had nothing but superlatives for Fred and his Goddess wife Mary. She is also very competent. It took her no time to straighten out what I guess I messed up. My CPAP worked flawlessly last night. Thank you Lynn.
