Jeri J. Hertzel, 55, St. George, died Friday, April 9, of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident Thursday, April 8.

According to a press release from Sheriff Kenny Coggins, the accident happened about 4 p.m. on U.S. 77 near Valley Heights High School, between Blue Rapids and Waterville.

 

Hertzel was driving a 2000 car east on U.S. 77 when the car left the roadway as Hertzel entered a curve. Coggins said when the vehicle went onto the shoulder, Hertzel over-corrected. The car skidded sideways, then skidded facing west and went across the road into the westbound lane.

The Hertzel vehicle was struck by a westbound 1995 pickup driven by Roy Cox, 56, Council Grove.

Hertzel was taken by Waterville Ambulance to Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville, and then air-lifted to BryanLGH Medical Center, Lincoln, where she died.

Cox was uninjured.  

Hertzel was the daughter of Doyle and Joy Temple, Marysville.

A graveside service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 21, at St. Gregory Cemetery, Marysville.

Hertzel was born Aug. 7, 1948, in Marysville, the daughter of Alvin Doyle and Joy Lorraine Marquardt Temple.  She graduated from Marysville High School in 1966 and x-ray tech school.

She was a swimmer at Hutchinson Community College and a champion swimmer at Emporia State University.

She worked for Community Memorial Hospital, Marysville, for eight years and was director of x-ray for Lafene Health Center, Kansas State University.

She married Robert Hertzel in 1969.  They were divorced.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Charles "Shorty" Marquardt and Floyd Temple, and a grandmother, Mable Temple.

She is survived by two sons, Timothy Hertzel, Wichita, and Patrick Hertzel, St. Louis; a daughter, Danielle Hertzel, Albany, N.Y.; a brother, Tommy Doyle Temple, Marysville; her parents, Alvin and Joy Temple, Marysville; a grandmother, Lucile Marquardt, Marysville; and two grandchildren.
