Bruce Heffner

Bruce HeffnerBruce died in a one-car accident in 1978 at the age of 17. According to news reports, his car ran off Rural Paved Road 1368 , 9 miles east of Lincolnton, and struck a tree traveling at a high rate of speed. He was employed at Heffner Tire Company in Lincolnton and was a junior at East Gaston High School. At the time, He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bremonne Heffner of Maiden; one brother, Joe Heffner, paternal grandmother Mrs. Fannie Heffner of North Belmont; maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. James Lawing of Catawba Heights; Maternal great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T.B. Polk of Cramerton, and paternal great grandmother, Mrs. Eva Cupp of McAdenville.
Funeral services were held at Centerview Baptist Church in North Belmont with the Rev. Jesse Ballew officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Gardens in Mt. Holly.

Bruce and I played trombone together. I'll always remember what a cut-up he was. I don't think I ever saw him without that devilish smile on his face!! He always had something funny to say to make us laugh. A group of band members played at his funeral and it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to get through. I've thought of him often over the years, always with fondness and a smile, but with sadness, too, because we lost him far too soon....
