Lori Gillie Hurd

After high school I attended BYU, where I changed majors a few times, then served a mission to Frankfurt, Germany. There were a few of us in that mission from Timpview, like Helen Dixon and Julia Pope, who were both my companions, Kevin Pinder, Steven(?) Beus, Dell (?) Brown, Brad Garner (I know I am forgetting others). It seems like everything good that has happened to me and that I have done has been as a result of my mission--my work, my studies, my confidence, and relationships. I taught at the MTC and taught German at the Y.

I finally graduated from BYU (in German with an English major), and got married the following day to my charming husband, Scott Hurd. We moved to Japan a few days later and have since lived in Arizona (where Scott worked for Intel Corp.), Texas, Missouri, Maryland, and Virginia before returning to the DC area. We have been blessed with seven children along the way.

Scott and I both returned to school in 1999, he attending medical school in Missouri and I part time for a master's degree in Humanities. Now he is a navy doc in Preventive Medicine and I am a homemaker. Our oldest daughter is married, and we have three daughters now on missions: Lyon France, Lyon France again, and Lima Peru. We have two high school sons and the youngest daughter is 11.

Among our children we have 6 musicians and one athlete. It is so great to see them grow, to see how different they are. It has been a very good life and we are looking forward to more of adventures and fulfillment as our family grows.

High school was so much fun, and the friends I made there are still very important to me. The exitement of attending a brand new school brought a huge amount of school spirit. We had great classmates, from the class of 78 on down--people of strong character, and a lot of comedians. Rosie McKay's fourth period US History comes to mind.

I have good memories of the teachers. I see that Mr. Fore has passed away. He was an excellent teacher and I always think of the avacado pizza example he used to teach us the Italian Avagadro's law. We were so sad that he went on to Snow College.

Mr. Brower in the drama department helped normal people become great people. By giving students from tech crew to acting something important to do, , he let us increase our confidence, and gave us a chance to shine. We had a lot of laughs. I can still quote Petruchio and Katherine from our first classroom exercise in Taming of the Shrew.

Mrs. Oldroyd and Mrs. Gladys Nelson still have an affect on me. They brought literature characters to life so well that I still recall clearly things like the Valkyries cavorting (vocabulary word) around, snatching young warriors, or the look in Mrs. Nelson's wild eyes as she imitated the drinking of mead in Beowulf. She influenced many of us to study English later on. And does anyone remember what it was like if you presented a bad author report? Talk about public humiliation. But she demanded excellence and got it from us.

Wasn't it cool that you could go anywhere for lunch? Now kids can't step off the campus curb without having their parents come in and sign them out. Or that debaters had their own keys to the building? Was that legal???

As I have read bios from the Class of 80, I am so impressed with you all. I am sorry I wasn't able to come to the reunion. It was a very eventful summer, and my husband was turning 50 the weekend of the reunion. We put a herd of 50 cows on the front lawn from 50 friends. Get it? Our last name is Hurd.
