Boys Shoot Arrows Into Giant Snake

The Sanford Herald

March 28, 1957

Five Sanford teenage boys, practicing with bows and arrows at Oldham’s Lake yesterday, found an unexpected target when Bill Adams, one of the group, nearly stepped on a giant snake slithering through a marshy place. The snake was longer than any of the boys.

John Humphrey quickly drew a steel-tipped arrow and cut the snake’s body from about 15 feet. John Foushee shot the reptile through the head with a second arrow, pinning it to the ground.

The others ¾ Adams, Stan Winborne and Robert Barbee ¾ fol-lowed up with shots that killed the snake.

The boys believed their victim to be a cottonmouth moccasin, sleek and lean from the winter’s hibernation. “It opened its mouth and it was white as cotton inside,” Winborne said.

Opinions from other sources were that the snake was a black racer. The poisonous cottonmouth, it was pointed out, is normally very thick and has a large diamond-shaped head.

The boys had been shooting at cans and trees before they came upon the snake.
