Herb Beningson died this morning in Sarasota, Florida at the age of 88.  He was one of my nearest and dearest friends and certainly one of the oldest. We met in Sunday School at the age of 5 at Temple Beth-El. We shared a lifetime of poker playing and double-dating when we were young to dinner parties, New Year's parties, and many delightful vacations together after we got married. Our wives, Naomi and Rhoda, were also very close friends.  Herb is survived by Rhoda, his son's Marc and David, their wives and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. His funeral will be in Stamford, the date to be announced shortly.

Longtime Stamford resident Herbert Elliott Beningson passed away Sunday September 18, 2022, in Sarasota Florida after a protracted fight with dementia. He was the second son of Arthur C. Beningson and Sarah Ruth Beningson (nee Cohen) who came to Stamford from Danbury Connecticut sometime after their marriage in 1926. They were among the early members of Temple Beth El on Prospect St. Herb was born in 1934 in Danbury where his grandparents still lived but was raised in Stamford on Newfield Ave. Herb graduated Stamford High school in 1951 and then attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy New York where he received a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1955.
After serving in the US Army as an engineer he and his older brother Robert founded Combustion Equipment Associates Inc. where he served as Executive Vice-President of Engineering. In 1959, he married Rhoda Rosenberg who was then teaching in the Stamford public school system and they raised their family primarily in Stamford, but also in Emerson, NJ, and later lived in Norwalk and Rowayton, CT. He was known as an avid sailor both cruising and racing his boats, all named Shmatte, on Long Island Sound with Rhoda and his sons Marc and David. He was a season ticket holder for the New York Islanders for many years and enjoyed all 4 Stanley Cup championship wins. Later Herb worked for Stratford Development Corp before retiring to Sarasota Florida at age 60. In Sarasota he was well known for driving around in his convertible or walking his wired haired miniature dachshund Sweetpea. He served as Treasurer and Maintenance Committee-chair on the board of 1350 Main Street and was the first recipient of the Herbert Beningson Memorial Award for service to the building before moving to Aviva Senior Living in Sarasota until his passing.
He is survived by his wife Rhoda, now living in Shelburne, VT, oldest son Marc and his wife Basya in Passaic, NJ, son David and his wife Judy in Waitsfield, VT, 4 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, 4 great-grandsons, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and an extended family of friends who all referred to him as Uncle Herb.
