This guy always had a smile. I don't know how he got the nickmame "goose" but I never called him anything but that. He was a natural athlete. He seemed to love playing any game that had something to do with putting a ball in the hole...like basketball and golf. He loved basketball, he loved to shoot, we teased him about that. But he loved the game of golf even more.
In seventh or eighth grade we'd hitchhike out to Miami Valley Country Club. He had an easy way with the caddy master and we always were given an opportunity to caddy throughout the summer. I can't recall if we got $2 or $3 dollars to carry a club member's bag for eighteen and if you doubled (i.e. carried two bags at once) you made $5 plus tip, of course. It got me started understanding the game of golf. (Can you imagine hitchhiking across town at that age? Or even doing that today!)
Goose was a good friend. The last I saw him was at the PGA in Dayton. Raymond Floyd won that tournament. Goose was the Asst. Pro at NCR if memory serves me. He was a great guy and one of those people you never forget!

I will always remember Goose because of his funny personalty and smile. We were good friends and played poker together a lot, but he could not bluff because he would start laughing when he had a good hand. He was one of a kind and will always be missed.

I remember being in the first grade with John at Merlin Heights. Our teacher was Mrs. Gunther. He was truly a funny character, without trying. I was painfully shy, so my way of making friends back then was through using humor. I called John "Gooseland" all the time, because it made him laugh and helped us be friends. It was a natural progression from Guethlen to Gooseland. Later on it got shortened to Goose. Whether or not thats' why he was later called Goose is history, but I like to think it was because of our friendship in the first grade.

John and I dated a little bit our senior year prior to graduation. We were friends and always had a good time together. He was so funny, how could one not enjoy his company. I had the opportunity to reconnect with him through business connections shortly before his death. He, very unfortunately, passed away the same night as my sister, Karen. I have since felt a connection with his sister, Sue, having lost our siblings tragically on the same night. Such a shame that two such wonderful souls should leave us so soon - way too soon.
