In Memory

Gary Henderberg

ROME >> Gary E. Henderberg, 65, of Old Oneida Road, Rome died Tuesday, April 14, 2015.
He was born March 28, 1950 in Rome, N.Y. the son of William E. and Kathryn Tyler Henderberg. Gary graduated from VVS Central School in 1968. On May 27, 1972 he married Janice Pritchard in the Lee Center United Methodist Church. Gary was a dairy farmer for many years, working with his dad on the Henderberg Dairy Farm until his dad's passing in 1976. Gary was a third generation farmer. His grandfather used to bottle milk at the farm and take it door to door. In 1993 Gary sold his farm. Gary also worked for Brown's Feed, Defence Fuel Support Point, Verona, and retired in 2001 from HP Hood Plant, Oneida. Gary was a member of Verona United Methodist Church.
In 1985 Gary started selling Christmas trees and then became involved in planting Christmas trees and learned how to make wreaths. This was the start of the Henderberg Trees and Wreaths family business. He was a member and past president of the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of NY State. Gary loved to demonstrate making Christmas wreaths and taught many people how to make beautiful wreaths. Many of the people Gary taught went on to win 1st place and Grand Champion at the N.Y.S Fair and National Tree Competition. Some of them also started their own tree and wreath business. Gary loved giving wagon rides at Christmas and seeing the joy it brought to families.
In his spare time he enjoyed using his Woodmizer to saw lumber. Gary also, loved to help friends boil sap, working in the woods and helping friends cut fire wood. He would always lend a helping hand to a friend or neighbor in need of help without thinking twice, regardless of what he had going on, they would do the same for him. Gary loved to sheer his trees by hand and always took the extra time to get every family the perfect Christmas tree. Many of Gary's nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and friends have many fond memories of Gary and his many Christmas tree expeditions over the years, as did Gary about them helping him with the Christmas tree farm.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; his mother, Kathryn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dawn and Andy Fanfarillo, Lee Center and Katie and Joshua Kinney, Durhamville; one son, Jay Henderberg, Rome; five grandchildren, Jenna, Abigail, and Avery Fanfarillo and Alexis and Tyler Kinney. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Hannah Grace Kinney. Gary leaves many dear friends; you know who you are.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Verona United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Lee Valley Cemetery.
