I now work half-time, basically work two weeks and off two weeks. This lets me travel to my houses in Naples, Florida and Newport, Vermont. Continuing to write non-fiction pieces and distance run.
I still work full-time, chairing a large academic anesthesia practice - doing about 1000 anesthetics per week. I plan to go half-time next year, and do more writing, exercise and travel. I qualified for the Boston Marathon this year with a 4:23, and would like to do more running. Life remains good. (Added 11/12/2020)
I have enjoyed a good diversity of work experiences as an anesthesiologist - academic and private practices, small and large hospitals, and even military. I have always worked full-time clinically, while having the fortune to serve as an academic department chair, medical staff president, and national society vice president.
Life has been good to me. My main hobbies are distance running, tennis, non-fiction writing, and travel.
(Added 7/19/2012) Looks as if I will not be able to attend the reunion. I may be one of a few still working full-time, and in my situation taking full-call in a busy anesthesia practice and travelling professionally. I was perhaps a late-bloomer - didn't figure out high school till ready to graduate - and now I'm a late-finisher. I enjoy being busy though, and don't really plan to retire for awhile. I was in Cincinnati last week, helping my mother move from her Hyde Park house where she had lived 50+ years to live with my sister in Michigan (my father died a few months ago). Cleaning out the house reminded me how much growing up there helped me in life. Ultimately I plan to live half years in Newport, Vermont and Naples, Florida, writing and painting, competing in running, and looking after grandkids - currently five, with one more coming.
