In Memory

Richard "Ricky" Sherriff

Richard Ricky Sherriff

Thank you to Joe Sherriff (Rick's brother) for the following information:

Richard Albert (Rick) Sherriff was born in Kansas City Kansas on September 13, 1943. His family lived in Kansas City, Colorado Springs, Oak Creek, and Santa Fe before moving to Alamosa when Rick was in the middle of his freshman year. At Alamosa Hight School Rick was in band and some school plays. Check your senior year annual for anything else.

After High School Rick went to Adams State and then on to grad  work at the University of Montana. Rick started working as a waiter to earn school money at the Campus cafe. I can't remember if it was while still in HS or when he started college.

After the U of  M, Rick had a teaching job at the University of Maryland. He left that to be a civilian employee of the Army, working at the Pentagon with a group that did liaison briefings for Congress. After a few years of that he enrolled at the University of Virginia for additional graduate work with the goal of becoming an architectural historian. It was something he had been interested in since grade school. While at U of V Rick supported himself as a waiter and then as manager of the clubhouse at a country club in the area.

Rick moved back to Washington DC and after not finding work as an historian he went to work for Marriot Hotels as a waiter in their downtown DC hotel. He griped about having to wear a tux to work, but the money was good and it gave him the means to travel.
Rick took time away from work to travel to Greece, Mexico, Peru, Australia, and China. As much as he loved to travel he loved people more. He was always concerned for the well being of the people around him and causes in support of individuals.

Rick's sister Julie brought him back to Colorado from DC and he spent his last days living in Alamosa with his sister Lynn. Rick past away on October 23, 1997.

Rick, My Friend

You were the truest friend I ever knew
Till then.  In all these years, only two have followed suit.
Clarinets, I think, first introduced us two,
And "Beatnik" poets whose voices, even then, had gone mute.

Miss Mathis aptly paired us in debate:
You were the seriously convincing intellect.
I, presenting second case, was more inclined to orate.
Then, there was “the dance” in Manhattan Nights, as I reflect.
(Forget we couldn’t dance! My God, did we look great!)

But — the most poignant act of love for me at your command
Was that night when the first and greatest love of my life,
Met us at the Sands for drinks.
You "stood by me", and held my hand,
While he introduced us to his new and lovely wife.

I cried till dawn within your arms, my Friend.
Though you are gone, my love for you will never end.
