What elementary did you go to?
Posted Saturday, January 17, 2009 04:26 PM

I remember there was nine elementary's in Ashland. Where did you go?
Wylie for me.

I remember going to the school when we had snow and going sledding down the three hills in front of the school. What a great time we all had.

Another Crabbe Tiger here! The best part about Crabbe was that our playground was Central Park's playground. As far as Miss Beckwith goes... " quit yo' meddlin' ".

Crabbe here. I remember in about 2nd grade, my first trip to the principal's office, Mrs Meenach. (Didn't know it was a preview of things to come in high school, huh Riedel??)It was Susie Norris, Dallas McGuire and myself. Seems we had learned how to use our phones for pranks. Also- my mom taught gym class so she was at school every day. I would get so homesick , I left all the time in 2nd grade. By third grade- I was deathly ill the first week of school and Mrs Cassity refused to let me go to the office. I finally had Nancy McPeek beg her and I was in the hospital for 2 weeks with meningitis. While I was still at home, we got a call that 15 third graders were to be moved to the 4th grade. (I think an overcrowding problem). So some of us spent that year with the class of '78.
Crabbe did have the best recess because of Central Park, I remember playing King of the Hill at the monkey bars. Another thing I remember is in 4th grade wearing mini skirts and by 6th grade - maxi skirts came along. Remember Dallas and Wilson??? We all three had one that matched.
And - who could forget Ms. Beckwith. "Quit yo meddlin chil" and I hope you did the shimmy when you said that John.

I went to Condit. It is now the Ashland Health Dept. My mother was a cheerleader there and so was I with Becky Mann. My grandfather, who is 95 and still living, also went to grade school there. Did anyone else attend grade school at Condit?

I went to Charles Russell!! Cheerleader for the Indians??? not positive on that!!
I remember Elaine Saunders, Robin Rae, Gwinna and myself had a little club back by the big tree near the playground.
At one point, i think we all bought red converse..chuck taylors. and, another time we all had these little basket purses....my memory is not real good though!
Is that right girls??

I tried to do the shimmy, Luanne, but just can't match Miss Beckwith. Remember that red, white, and blue iced tea glass she ALWAYS drank from?

I went to visit Miss Beckwith several times two years ago and she hadn't changed a bit and had the most remarkable stories to tell. The fact that a black teacher, in the 1960's and 1970's had to discipline white kids and deal with their white parents, some of whom were quite prominent, was a challenge she dealt with. And she did it with grace and sheer will.

Charles Russell!!!
I think it was the Redman. But I am not sure. It had something to do with an Indian.

And your wonderful mother was by far my favorite teacher.

Add Lisa Morris to the cheerleading squad at Hager.

I remember the purses, not the shoes. I also remember the poem we wrote about Mr. Salyers and recited it in front on class. ...'he plays with his paddle like a little baby rattle.'

I attended Condit grades 1-4. One of my biggest memories there was Pansy Clark (principal there then) chasing a student all around the school yard. She was running as fast as she could and not making up any ground. Don't remember any of the story other than her running.

Attended Oakview grades 5 and 6.

I went to West Broad Elementary, Columbus, Ohio for kindergarten and first grade, moved back to Ashland, went to Oakview in second and third(had Tabor for 2nd, Wheeler for 3rd). Remember reccess one day, playing kickball, Ernie Angel threw a rock or dirt clod at me, hit me in the ankle(it hurt!) so I picked up a rock and threw at him. Hit him right below the eye and it bled! Mrs. Williams was on duty and scolded me severely on the way to Mr. Tate's office. My Mom had to come to school and pick me up. Anyway, went to Ironville fourth throuh eighth, after we moved to BoyScout Rd., then switched back to Ashland Schools to Putnam for ninth!

I went to Condit. Go Comets! I remember in third grade Mrs. Taylor,I went to the chalk board and when I got back to my desk there was a present from French Harmon.. It was a bracelet! It was like getting an engagement ring! My favorite teacher was 5th grade Mrs. Trabandt! She would let Donna Ferrell, Sheri Workman and me come to her house to "grade papers". We had so much fun!

I went to Mrs. Pelphrey's kindergarten school on Southview! I know a bunch of you were in my class....I have the graduation pictures!

After kindergarten, I went to Oakview for 1st & 2nd grade. My mom & dad moved to our house on Crittenden Drive while I was in 2nd grade, so that put me in Charles Russell for 3rd through 6th. I lived right around the block from Elaine and Nancy Saunders, Greg Conner, David Hambrick & Laurie Morgan. Greg....you were so mean!! Smile

Hatcher - Go Tigers! I didn't go to kindergarten. I lived on Long Street and went to Hatcher all 6 years. It was a great school! Since it was one of the smaller schools in Ashland, we frequently had split grade classes. My 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade years I was in split grade classes, and 3rd, 5th and 6th were single grade classes.
For those of you from Condit, do any of you remember Danny Kouns? He was my uncle (mom's little brother), and died from a brain aneurism between our 7th and 8th grade years at Putnam, summer of 1974, at the age of 14. He was such a kind and gentle child, very quiet. He was in our grade.

Hi Richard, I had Lowery (1st) split class, Bales (2nd) split class, and Sturgill (3rd) single grade class. We were probably in the same class at some point at Hatcher. I look forward to seeing your class pictures! I've asked my mom and my step mom both if they have any of my class pictures from grade school but neither have been able to locate them so far. Take care, Susan
