My fondest memory of Rufus still puzzles me. The day after Christmas in 1958, I entered St. Joseph's Hospital to have all of my wisdom teeth surgically extracted. After having the surgery, getting sick because of the anesthesia, and having my jaws wired shut, I was one very miserable 15 year old. I had only one visitor in the hospital.....yes, it was Rufus. He came and stayed for almost an hour visiting with me and my mom. I had always thought he was "cute" from afar, but had really only marginally known him. What caused him to come to the hospital to visit me remains a puzzle, but certainly brought a bit of happiness to my life.
He was so militarily inclined that I have wondered if his death was a result of the war in Vietnam. Does anyone know?
