In Memory

Lee Miller

Lee Miller

The following was submitted by Paul Shelton:

Lee Francis Miller, born April 22, 1945, has left this world, and I will cherish his memory until my own last breath. We met in Mr. Rief's chemistry class and became fast friends, having similar interests and philosophies that sustained our friendship for many years. He died March 22, 2015, one month shy of his 70th birthday, of myelodysplasia, a for of bone marrow cancer.  He received a close-match transplant from a brother, but it  was unsuccessful, ending in graph-host disease wherein the newly transplanted immune system attacksthe whole body.

We spent many hours in our shops together, or on the trail or on the water, and shared many trials and successes together.  Lee, always sensible and eternally kind and composed, could not have  been a finer friend.  We had our first dates together, a double date affair to the movies, and we spent four years at the  UW as dorm mates.

Lee spent his Viet Nam service as an MP in an outpost near Saigon and then settled near Green Lake in north Seattle for the rest of his days.  He held a string of jobs related to boat building and engineering design, finally working as a top rate floor salesperson at REI's downtown store for a decade or more in bicycles and kayaks. He knew bikes well, having repaired many in his basement shop, and  kayaks were a passion for a time.  He built several that are still floating around somewhere today.  His greatest talent was in photography.  He had a gift for spotting interesting subjects and angles to create photos that captured attention with lighting, action, a story, or wonderful humor.

Lee is survived by two younger brothers and his wife Toni.  They had no children.  I will never pass Kid Valley south of Green Lake without fond memories of the many times over the years we played hooky from our busy schedules to catch up over giant illicit hamburgers.  It's unfortunate Lee is gone, but his memory still makes the lives of all who knew him, loved him, and appreciated him all the richer.

I'm so sorry to hear about Lee's passing.  I remember him as a sweet boy, a little shy, always friendly.  We ran into eachother a few times over the years and it was always a pleasure to see him.
