Somehow ended up working in orthopedic offices, specifically, maintaining
physician licenses, certifications, and doing other kinds of cat-herding. Believe it or not, it's been fun--but it hasn't inspired a novel.

Chasing down woodcarver Dudley Carter and at last getting him to carve a small thunderbird signpost for the Senior Memorial--just Lee Miller and I--Mr. Carver's wife hovering protectively while we talked. He explained his studio, a replica, he said, of a Haida dwelling, which was a kind of knock- down structure built around a fireplace. When the Haida moved on, they took down the house and rebuilt it around another fireplace somewhere else, he said.

I heard our thunderbird signpost was destroyed by fire years later.
