Val Foubert probably had the greatest influence on me in high school.  I was not the best student, very average at best, but he saw something in me that inspired me to do my best.  I received very few "A's" but aced all his classes.  I would go on to major in Speech Communications in college and did very well...almost straight A's.  How did he do that?  He always told me I was good at what I did and encouraged me to challenge myself.    His praise and constant concern for me drove me to be a better student then I had been in the past.   Thanks Val...I remember you fondly and may you rest in peace.

Valjean Philip Foubert was born on May 29, 1924, in Wenatchee, WA.  He died at age 82 in the early morning of Friday, March 9, 2007, at home in family hospice care in Federal Way, WA.  He sailed off peacefully one early morning, having folded his own arms across his chest in a voluntary gesture of finality.

Family and friends, including former students from fifty years ago, celebrated his life at a memorial service in Issaquah, WA, before his burial at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bellevue, on March 13, 2007.  A military Honor Guard saluted his US Army service in World War II with traditional burial honors, including presentation of the US Flag, and the playing of "Taps".  There were no dry eyes:  "Taps" can do that to you -- its long sorrowful notes of farewell evoke the unspeakable, summoning us to the inescapable final goodbye.

A websiteat www.valfoubert.com offers a place of remembrance for those who knew and loved Val Foubert: to honor his memory, to celebrate qualities of his inimitable character, and to share stories about the distinctive person that he was.
