Ed Romeo (Teacher)

Edward Anthony Romeo, June 11, 1930 - August 6, 2012

US Veteran Edward Anthony Romeo was born in Seattle on June 11, 1930. The youngest child of Carlo and Mary Romeo, Ed attended St. Mary's Elementary, Franklin HS, and entered Seattle University on a baseball scholarship.  In his sophomore year Ed enlisted in the US Army and served three years in Alaska in The AAA Battery.  Upon discharge he returned to Seattle U, graduating with an education degree.

Ed met his life-long love Mary Geraghty at school; they were married in 1956, a union blessed with four daughters and five grandkids.  After graduation, Ed worked in Sumner for a year, then transferred to the Bellevue School District, where he worked three years at Bellevue JH, then transferred to Sammamish HS

At Sammamish, Ed taught math, driver's ed, and American history.  He coached the Totem's baseball team for most of his years at Sammamish, and served as a Guidance Counselor for the last 10 years of his career.  Ed worked summers at Longacres and, upon retirement from teaching, continued to work full time at Longacres and at Emerald Downs, making close friendships on both sides of the track.

In full retirement, Ed was able to expand his gardening talents and also cultivated a wide range of friendships, including his daily coffee group at Victor's.  His neighbors knew him as Farmer Ed, always  willing to lend a hand, a mower or a pasture.  He loved keeping in touch with friends across the country with weekly calls, and delivered endless batches of Mary's pizzelles during the holidays and vegetables when in season.

Loving husband, doting father, proud grandfather, generous friend--Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  The family would like to thank the staff at Overlake Oncology Clinic, especially Dr. J. Walter Smith and Patti.  They also would like to thank their incredible neighbors for all their support, as well as Eastside Fire and Rescue.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Overlake Oncology Center or Eastside Fire and Rescue in his memory.  There will be a celebration of Ed's life on October 13th from noon to 3 PM at Mary, Queen of Peace, 1121 228th Ave SE, Sammamsih 98075

During my infrequent visits to Seattle after graduation, I would stop by the school to visit with Ed. He was a great source of information on the changes that took place at Sammamish from 1963 to 1970.

Upon moving back to Seattle in 1988, I would often see Ed at Sammamish High School Basketball games as he was always volunteering to man the ticket booth. This held true also for the Kingco and state tournaments as well.

Ed was an usher at Mariner games, a great way to get paid to watch a game!

He was also an usher at Longacres and on the last day of racing, I made my one and only trip to bet on the horses and, of course, saw Ed as an usher. (Only previous trip to Longacres was the night of our graduation!)

I was humbled to learn Ed had also served in the military as so many of our teachers did. It took this forum to learn about the military service of not only Ed Romeo, but so many other teachers and classmates.

The only class I had with Ed was Drivers Ed. A geat personality and a wonderful member of the Sammamish teaching staff.  I shall always remember Ed for his soft spoken voice and his constant smile.
