What is your favorite memory from High School?
Posted Sunday, March 29, 2009 06:55 PM
I'm not sure this is my favorite memory, but it's the one that pops up first in my head....I had to run a mile for every class that I cut in my Senior year or no diploma. We were just weeks away from graduation and my total miles that I "owed" came to 62! I ran before school, at lunch & after school to reach this goal. Needless to say, I was not very happy! After a week or two of this routine, something clicked and I could have run for ever. I kind of liked it! Running gave me lots of time to reflect. It's one of the few lessons that stuck, teaching me to be responsible for my decisions or accept the consequences.

One of my many favourite memories is the "Toga" party at someone's home up in Hallmark in November (I think) of our senior year. The movie "Animal House" was in the theatres earlier that summer, and this inspiration for the party could not be passed up...

My second car was a little forest green 1967 Austin Healy Sprite convertible. It was a bitterly cold night, and myself and a buddy (I forget who) and three girls (I forget who they were, too!) drove up to that party, all five of us in that little two-seater. The roof was down, and I can vividly remember racing past Carlmont Shopping Centre and a Belmont Police car parked in the gas station on the corner, the chilly November wind blowing our flowing togas like wings of angels. I can still see the incredulous look on the police officers' face! Why he didn't chase after us is a question that I still ponder to this day...

The party details have been blurred by memory (and I'm sure by a few intoxicants consumed that night!), but that memory of care-free youth, wanton abandon, and foolish safety risks will stay etched forever in my "Happy Place"!

When I first saw the topic, I thought to myself, what do I even remember about high school?  Some days I can barely remember what I had for breakfast, let alone what happened 30 years ago!  However, the more I thought about it, the more things came to mind.  As so often happens, I can't follow the rules and won't pick just one.  I (oddly enough) have fond memories of Mr. McCormick's Latin class - handcuffing someone to the door, trying to pass off Queen's "A Night at the Opera" album as acutally opera music.  Friday night bonfires at Half Moon Bay, sunny Saturday afternoons at the Pulgas Water Temple (someone had to finish the keg left over from the previous night at the beach...).  Going to two different Sr. Balls in the same weekend with two different dates.  To be young again....

Oh my goodness Janet, I was in the same boat, there were a few of us that always cut Mr. Browns class and he said he didn't care, then weeks before graduation he changed his mind and made us to every lap, I never ran so much, Steve, Mike and I were out there every day too, at least 3 times a day.  I even ran out of time, and was not going to make it, but thank goodness for Mr. Sweet to save the day!!
