In Memory

Mike Somerville - Class Of 1979

Mike lived two doors down from me in Belmont where we went to school together for many years. I wish I knew more about what he was going through. Mike was born on November 12th, 1961 and died March 17th, 1981. He was 19 years old when he took his life. Janet Lindquist Griswold

I remember Mike as my classmate for many years at Barrett (Grades 4 - 6), Ralston Jr. High, and Carlmont.

My fondest memories are from Mountaineering class (PE) my junior & senior years at Carlmont. We all called Mike "Spider" because he was one hell of a talented climber. He would stick like glue to any wall/cliff. He was a natural climber, and I imagine him today watching over all the young climbers at Yosemite. I think of Mike often, and his memories always bring a smile to my face...

It's funny: whenever I've been in a bind in the wilderness, Mike has somehow always entered my thoughts, and I could always hear his voice giving me encouragement, just like that one day climbing "Wagon Wheel" at Los Padres National Forest in 1978. I had trouble making the last pitch, but Mike talked me through it, and I made it. Thank you, Mike; and we'll talk again soon in the hills...

I too remember Mike from the early, early days.  I had 3rd grade notes from Mike stashed away for years.... We lost touch a bit in High School, then reconnected unexpectedly at CSM.  We spoke of flying - I had my license and he was interested in getting invovled with that. We talked about the Aero program, and transferring to SJSU.....

It was shortly after that that Mike died.  I had no idea what he might have been going through.  I'm glad we had a chance to talk.  We we could have talked more, later.
