Many of our class might not have known my mom, who graduated with us. I sat next to her at graduation and only got my diploma first because we were seated alphabetically. I think her GPA was higher than mine, a reflection of her greater interest and motivation. She later went on to get a masters degree in anthropology, studying under Mike Whiteford (Class of 1967) at Iowa State University. She inspired me to return to school twice for advanced degrees because if she wasn’t too old for school, neither was I. She died in 2004 in Des Moines, Iowa.
