Jean Douglas (Motsinger)

Robbie Scudder, friend and  confidant.  Our conversations ranged from assistance with course and professor selection to how to get a daily shower while on the French seminar?  (Use the swimming pool facilities).

My most enduring memory of Rob occurred on my first and only visit to Lucy Bates and her parents at their summer home on the Massachusetts coast.   Lucy prearranged with Rob to meet us a local  bar and for a fishing trip/boat ride scheduled the following day and hosted by Rob’s parents.  Lucy and I had turned the magic 21.   Rob had not celebrated his big birthday and was arrested for underage drinking.  The next day fishing trip began as an overwhelming guilt trip.  Surprised the event was not cancelled?  The trip was very quiet and oh so “sobering”.  Tried to break the icy atmosphere, support Rob, and make the most of the experience.  Nothing worked until Rob’s mother accidentally caught her hook on her back side as she was casting.  Rob and I looked at one another and laughed as we rushed to her aid.  For the first time since I met her, she looked in Rob’s eyes and started to laugh, the others on the boat laughed, and in an instant, Rob was forgiven and I was welcomed as a friend.

Adieu, Mon Ami

Rob was our fraternity pledge class president back in the day.  He was a soft-spoken New Englander, whose only vice was blabbing all of our "sacred frat secrets" to the ladies after he'd consumed a few devil's brews.!!!  RIP, Robbie.....
