John Larry Peacock (1962):
Mr. Thompson, as was his always courteous manner, met me in the hall one day during my junior or senior year in high school and asked me if he could talk to me briefly. I said "of course" and he asked me what my plans were after graduation. I told him "I don't know!" He then asked if I had considered going to college. I answered No, but that I would certainly consider it. As a result of that conversation, I did apply to Campbell. got accepted, graduated with a "B" average and was recruited by the U. S. General Accounting Office, the ovesight agency of the Congress and spent more than 40 years there. I just realized that my federal pension is now more than my salary was the last year of my career. I retired 20 years ago this past January. AND I OWE ALL OF THIS TO THAT BRIEF DISCUSSION i HAD IN THE HALL WITH MR. THOMPSON ALMOST 60 YEARS AGO. I have only one reqret--that I did not see Mr. Thompson before he passed away to thank him personally. May God Bless his soul!
And as a footnote to my blessing noted above, I had an Accouning professor at Campbell who stopped by my desk in class one day and asked me to stop by his office after class. I did and he simply asked me to go by and talk to the GAO recruiting team during their visit the next week. Of course, I did! I have shared my experiences with my children and grandchilden and those of my siblings, friends and others as I have the opportunity to do so.
