School Memories:

Running away from hall monitors, general troublemaking and escaping the consequences, overall outsmarting the unit coordinators and other teachers. I was inspired in Ms. Haskin's English Literature class to enjoy reading and began learning to become comfortable speaking in front of people. I'll continue to update as it's very late here. :)

Shortly after I signed on to the BHS site, Tim sent me an email & we began to correspond. We discussed both our interests as educators, our travel experiences and memories of growing up in Berea. He was currently working on getting his Eco-Tourism Program for students up and running.

I have included an the text from an article with comments from a colleague.

On a personal note, I was saddened to hear of his death and wish peace and comfort for his family and loved ones...

What I will remember is his optimism, enthusiasm, love of teaching, as well as his unique way of signing off on his correspondences..."FASKA ENDEAVOURS"...

"Ex-MHS English teacher was ‘friendly, funny, honest’
BY ANDREW O. DE GUZMAN – DAILY MARIANAS VARIETY NEWS STAFF
TUESDAY, 06 OCTOBER 2009 00:00
THE former English teacher at Marianas High School, whose body was found in his rented room in San Vicente on Wednesday morning, was a “friendly, funny, [and an] honest guy,” according to a former colleague.
“The image of Tim [Faska] sitting at the counter at Wild Bill’s eating his breakfast and being the friendly, funny, honest guy he was, is etched in my mind,” recalled Jeffrey Turbitt, a former Saipan teacher.
“I’m extremely shocked, upset and saddened about this news. I heard from a mutual friend he had been very ill,” Turbitt added.
Timothy James Faska, 49, was “very involved in academic extracurricular activities at MHS and spent many years in the Marianas,” Turbitt said.
He added, “[Faska’s] passing is a huge loss to the islands. He will be missed by many.”
Chief Prosecutor Kevin Lynch said Faska’s next of kin had already been notified.
“The brother of the victim was contacted by the Office of Attorney General,” said Department of Public Safety acting spokesman PO2 Jason Tarkong.
Faska was last seen alive on Saturday after a Stanford Resort employee fixed his room’s electrical safety box...."

Tim was one of the first to write to me when I signed on here.

He wrote in such a lively and free way; it's hard to imagine him as anything but fully alive and fully engaged.

I was really looking forward to "re-meeting" him.

May he rest in peace, but may he sneak in a few heavenly adventures, as well.

My all-too-brief friendship with Tim was born with the creation of this website. I hadn't spoken two words to Tim during our entire time in high school or junior high for that matter. He was one of those fellow students I saw every day, but for whatever reason, we never connected.

I read his bio and saw he was a teacher on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He was also a retired Navy man like my dad, so I emailed him. We struck up a continuous correspondence for several months. He was witty, well-read, upbeat, kind and always quick to offer generous, sincere words of hope and encouragement.

As I write this I am stunned at the realization of his untimely death and the significant effect his fleeting presence had on my life. To Tim's family and friends I offer my condolences. Undoubtedly,Tim's passing has left a gaping hole in the lives of many.
