Jack Mallory

There you go again, Joan, with your typical left-wing reliance on real data and pertinent questions. When John, DeSantis, and Kari Lake reveal the secret plan to lower the price of gas, bananas, and Big Bend National Park won't YOU be embarrassed? Gofer it, John!

Somebody help me out. What does Big Bend National Park have to do with all of this?

As we move closer to another sure-to-be chaotic election, remember to get outside and breathe.

Hi Friends, Just to give us some optimism. Michael Moore successfully called the 2016 election for Trump and he thinks that the dems will do well in both the House and the Senate....I pray he is right. Love to all, Joanie    there are some like Howard Dean and David Plouffe that don't think the polls are accurate.

There is NOBODY who can say what will happen on Tuesday. Anybody that says they know is just wrong. There are dozens of possible scenarios. Unfortunately, we have to wait......and I'm afraid it's going to take a few days to get a clear picture.

Meanwhile my son just arrived in Sharm El-Sheikn, Egypt where the COP27  (the annual worldwide climate conference) is taking place. This time it's happening at a gorgeous resort on the Red Sea. Before anybody starts screaming about the cost to our government, I looked it up. You could book a room with breakfast for this week and it would be $77 per night. Sure is a far cry from the charges we paid for Trump's security details at his hotels. Was it $1500 per night going into his pocket?

Amid all the discussion of mail-in ballot voting integrity, I'm happy to report that California seems to have it down right. I got an email saying my ballot had been mailed to me. I got another email saying it had been delivered. I got a third email telling me that my ballot had been received and counted. What more could you want?

I guess Mr Smeby is too busy to answer the SO many questions we've asked him. They're not hard questions. What is DeSantis' plan to solve all the stuff Mr Smeby is unhappy about - inflation, gas prices, getting into Big Bend Park?

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Joan, that is wonderful that your son arrived at the climate conference...it's such an urgent issue.

I didn't mean to imply that Howard Dean or David Plouffe or Michael Moore or Nancy Pelosi knows for sure what is going to happen on election day. Just with months and months of hearing we are in for a red wave. I thought it's nice to put out some other more hopeful viewpoints.Though no one knows for sure as Joan rightly said. The huge early voting is hopeful and enthusiasm is high for both sides with more Democrats I hear registered than Republicans. It boils down to who turns out to vote. I pray it's way more on our side. Women are signing up to vote much more this election so the Roe v Wade decision is motivating them. I keep contributing when I can and we can all do our part like Obama and Biden say as Democracy really is in the ballot. Love, Joanie♥️

Willie Horton Is Back

By Dead-center Shacks

Go back to the summer of 1988 when Democratic Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis was well ahead in the polls in his race for the presidency against Vice President George H. W. Bush.  But that was before Lee Atwater – Bush’s chief strategist and architect of Bush’s so-called southern strategy – attended a motorcycle convention and heard about convicted felon Willie Horton’s furlough from prison in Massachusetts.

That gave birth to the Atwater’s Willie Horton racist ads, which Ann Coulter described as the “greatest campaign ad in political history.”  In a matter of weeks, Dukakis was painted as being soft on crime, instilling race and fear into the campaign across the land and wiping out Dukakis’s lead in the polls and putting a pinch on his fund-raising efforts.  It led to his defeat.

Years later when on his death bed, Lee Atwater apologized to Michael Dukakis for the “naked cruelty” of the Willie Horton ads and his campaign strategy.

Well, if you thought that type of ad was long gone, take a look at GOP candidate Hung Cao’s ads in Virginia’s 10thcongressional district against Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton.  Very ugly and racist ads are being played painting Wexton as being soft on crime in the gerrymandered 10th congressional district, which includes some of the outlying DC suburbs.

Or look at the Wisconsin Senate race where incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson is running against Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes. In that race, Johnson is running ads darkening the skin of the light skinned Barnes in addition to making outright racist charges right out of Lee Atwater’s playbook. In Johnson’s twisted mind, darker skinned African Americans (like Willie Horton) are more menacing and threatening in the world of white supremacy and his MAGA supporters.

And, believe me, Ron Johnson, a Tea Party original first elected in 2010 and married into money (his wife’s family owned a plastics dynasty that has been polluting America for generations) is a true believer in white supremacy and conspiracy theories of all types, including Trump’s stolen election, January 6th was just a walk in the park, vaccines will kill you, and mouthwash is the best cure for Covid.  In fact, he’s never met a conspiracy theory he didn’t like.  As for the future, Johnson’s all for eliminating Social Security and Medicare and arming America with more guns to combat crime once Republicans regain control of Congress.

What happens in Virginia, however, could set the pace for this off-year election, which in my view is still a toss-up and depends on which side works harder to turnout the vote.

Among the three key Virginia races Democrat and January 6th Commission member Elaine Laria is running against Jennifer Kiggans, an election denier, Trump supporter and someone who believes January 6th was a peaceful protest.  But District 2 is in the Newport News area, a strong military district that has traditionally voted Republican.  So this could be a very close election.

The other key Virginia race is incumbent Rep. Abigail Spanberger (a former CIA case worker) against Yesli Vega – oh yes, another election denier and believer in all the other crazy conspiracy theories of the far right.

This race is so close that Liz Cheney came out and endorsed Spanberger yesterday.  “We don’t agree on every policy, but I am absolutely certain that Abigail is dedicated to serving this country and her constituents and defending our Constitution,” Cheney said. “Abigail’s opponent is promoting conspiracy theories, denying election outcomes she disagrees with, and defending the indefensible. We need our elected leaders to be honest, serious, and responsible, which is why I would urge voters in Virginia’s 7th District to support Abigail Spanberger.”

So keep an eye on these three Virginia races tomorrow night – it might foreshadow how the election is going nationally.

BTW, great post Joan – you are right on target.

Reality check. Went in to vote about 7:30 this morning, having read too much news. Afraid that I'd find camouflaged "poll watchers" with AR15s and ammo bandoliers challenging anyone who looked vaguely like a liberal voter.

But, as usual in Penacook over the last 10 years, it was a relaxed and congenial democratic process. Chatted with neighbors and the NH Speaker of the House, another Vietnam vet. Two 80-ish observers sitting quietly, watching the voting.

*********

"What do we mean when we say that first of all we seek liberty? I often wonder whether we do not rest our hopes too much upon constitutions, upon laws, and upon courts. These are false hopes; believe me, these are false hopes. Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it; no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to help it. While it lies there, it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it. And what is this liberty which must lie in the hearts of men and women? It is not the ruthless, the unbridled will; it is not freedom to do as one likes. That is the denial of liberty, and leads straight to its overthrow. A society in which men recognize no check upon their freedom soon becomes a society where freedom is the possession of only a savage few—as we have learned to our sorrow.

"What then is the spirit of liberty? I cannot define it; I can only tell you my own faith. The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interest alongside its own without bias; the spirit of liberty remembers that not even a sparrow falls to earth unheeded; the spirit of liberty is the spirit of him who, near two thousand years ago, taught mankind that lesson it has never learned, but has never quite forgotten—that there may be a kingdom where the least shall be heard and considered side-by-side with the greatest."

Yes Jack, the Maga wave didn't materialize fortunately. It could have been so much worse. Looks like the women came out re reproductive rights and the extreme magas mostly we're rejected. Still upset if they get the House and start all the investigations and try to find something to impeach Biden on but I'm happy that we might get the Senate and hope the House is in play

As John has reconsidered his choice for the 2024 Republican nominee, I think Js and J thinkalikes should look anew at the Democratic presidential field. This opinion piece does that, looking so far into the list of lesser-knowns that even Forum members might consider a run!

Jack, I can't read the NYTimes article save for a few lines before it blocks it to subscribers. Biden now has the wind at his back.post midterm elections. He has accomplished more in two years than most Presidents with the infrastructure bill, the Inflation Reduction bill which has the biggest climate bill in our history and the lowering of prescription drugs etc. and many other important bills . And what about the skillful way he organized NATO re supporting Ukraine and led the sanctions on Putin. He has a wealth of experience that the other possible presidential candidates mentioned don't have. Why would we want to not take advantage of Bidens expertise and contributions to this country if he feels up to running which he intends to do so far..
I know I am in the minority, but I think we would be so lucky to get another term of Joe Biden. Love Joanie

11/11/22 06:31 AM #16302

Jack Mallory

Joanie--I'll post a few excerpts from that NYT article. It begins,

"The midterms were very good to President Biden.

"His party avoided the shellacking that it suffered halfway through President Obama’s first term and the drubbing that Republicans experienced after two years of President Trump. After two years of Biden, voters gave Democrats a gentle slap on the wrist. That makes him look like a miracle worker and may well muffle chatter about whether he should run for a second term.

"But the noise won’t go away entirely. There’s the matter of Biden’s age, and there’s the matter of Biden’s energy.

"He was already the oldest president in American history when he took office at 78. He’d be just shy of 82 on Election Day in 2024. It shows. He doesn’t project anything like the ebullience he once did. His flubs transcend malapropisms. Last month, he erroneously claimed that student loan forgiveness — which he decreed by executive action — passed Congress by a few votes. That was the most glaring misstatement of his own record but hardly the only one.

"Does Biden have the grip and glow to make certain that Donald Trump or some other Republican doesn’t win the presidency in two years? Before the midterms, polling showed that a significant majority of Democrats craved the chance to pick somebody else. I’m not sure that this week’s results will change that sentiment much. It’s how I feel.

"But which somebody? Here’s an assessment (and rough ranking) of various Democrats who would be possible contenders in 2024 or who are poised to emerge as party leaders on the far side of Biden, whenever that is.

"Pay the closest attention to …

Kamala Harris

Pete Buttigieg

Gretchen Whitmer . . . "

Bruni goes on at length to discuss these and other potential Democratic presidential candidates, a few of whom I've never heard of.

Jack, I appreciate that you printed some excerpts from the NYT editorial. I can never see them as I am not a subscriber so that was very helpful. I can now see the point the writer was making. He is concerned about age and energy and bumbles....I have to say that when I see Biden's schedule of going overseas so much and going to Phladelphia and Maryland and other places one after the other, I think he is doing very well..I know Jack, I am in the minority on the forum. but I think he has what it takes to take us through another term. I think he is uniquely poised to continue to do many more good thingsl like he has already accomplished in just two years  I know others don't agree with me...I appreciate again the excerpts....also don't think the suggested ones measure up to Biden's experience in foreign affairs and domestic policy...I like all three, but just still think we would be lucky to get Joe Biden again. Love, Joanie

Marking Veterans Day with some vet-related personal pix.

Mom, USN, Lt. JG.

Dad, Lt, USN, WWII

One of the very few pix I took in Vietnam that survived the year there and the years since.

Myself, other veterans of what they called "The American War": various vets of the People's Army of Vietnam (NVA) and People's Liberation Front (VC). Gentleman to my left was the commander of the regiment my unit was most often in combat against.

Yolanda, one of my several immigrant students who are vets.

There will be many prayers and other references to god today. Irrelevant to many veterans.

Jack the photos of your parents and others are wonderful. What a beautiful mother you had and handsome father. I'm sure they meant a lot to you.
Are there policy reasons you are not enthused about Biden or is it his age? Probably I'm the only one of our group enthused. Just don't get with all the has accomplished why he isn't more popular. . Anyway. Take care and love joanie❤️

To Jack and Deb, a late Veteran's Day salute for all the services you have given to others who have served, and for your service at VA centers and elsewhere in preventing further harm and death.  The article below sure made me think of you two.  Hope you, and others, have read it -- or do now.

Thanks for thinking of us on Veterans Day, Steve. Like Joanie can't get past the NYT paywall, I can't see WaPo articles. But when Deb is up I'll see if she can open it.

Grilled our anniversary steak in the rain, 60ish degrees last night. But the euphemistic "wintry mix" is forecast for Wed as the temps drop. Time, I'm afraid, to put the boats up!

As the Arizona senate seat goes to the dems and the red piddle continues to subside, we await the oh-so-ex's announcement:

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Jack, Trump is already on the so called TRUTH social claiming the Arizona election is stolen with of course no evidence of that as they are carefully counting the votes. The red wave is turning out to be a possible piddle....even the House has a path, though slim to victory. I am hoping. I admire that you and Deb are out on the water a lot...its good to be active. Happy Anniversary. I like steak that you said you made. Love, Joanie

I'll be dipped. On another try I did get that article open, Stephen. Very nice piece. Or peace. So decent and affirming a read after this election season, or at least towards its end. No lies, no posturing, no advantage seeking on the part of VA staff or the author. Nice comments as well. Much needed read.

Being a nearly professional pearl-clutcher here's a sobering thought;

This is from the Cook Political Report from January of this year.

Should Republicans net more than one seat this fall and retake the chamber, Democrats will have a tall order to get it back in 2024. They’ll be defending 23 seats to the GOP’s 10. Of the 23, three are in states Trump carried: Jon Tester in Montana, Sherrod Brown in Ohio, and Joe Manchin in West Virginia. Another five come from states that Biden won by 5 points or less. None of the 10 GOP seats up are in Biden states and only one, Rick Scott in Florida, is in a state that Trump won by 5 points or less.

Almost enough to make me a believer, and certainly proof that if there is a god they're a Democrat (I'm unaware of which personal pronouns god prefers).

Joanie Bender (Grosfeld)

Joan, the Cooke report in Nov 4 2022 predicted an even bigger red wave than previously thought so I'm not sure their take is so reliable. You pointed out to me when I mentioned a more upbeat outlook for the midterms that anyone is wrong to act like they know what will happen but since you mentioned the Cooke reports views for 2024, I have heard some good commentators like David Plouffe etc who think that the Democrats will do really well in the Presidential election due to what has happened in the midterms. Love joanie

The Blue Bay Sweep

By Dead-Center Shacks

To coin a phrase used by one of our Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school alums who served in the Trump White House (Peter Navarro, B-CC class of ’67-- three years after we graduated and scattered across the country), the Senate wins in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada were what I would call a “Blue Bay Sweep.”   How sweet it is!

When Abigail Spanberger and Jennifer Wexton won their House races in Virginia – Spanberger by a razor thin edge – I knew Democrats were in for a good night.  But the near sweep in the Senate wasn’t without its share of disappointments -- Beto O’Rouke in his race for the Texas Governorship and Tim Ryan in the Ohio Senate race, just to name a few.  But hands-down Tim Ryan gave the best concession speech, saying what was once obvious and a generally accepted rule of the democratic process but seems to have been lost in recent election cycles:

“I had the privilege to concede this race to J.D. Vance.  Because the way this country operates is that you lose an election, you concede.  You respect the will of the people.  You can’t have a system where if you win, it’s a legitimate election, and if you lose, someone stole it.  That is not how we can move forward in the United States…

“I’m concerned that this country, as we move forward, it may get worse before it gets better.  But we need good people who are going to honor the institutions of this country.”

I wonder if Kari Lake who appears to be losing the governor’s race in Arizona will be as gracious in defeat as Tim Ryan?

(Editor's note:  I write for several other groups, so that's why I spelled out our connection to B-CC at the top of this post.).
