Janet--parallel monologues:

"Yes it is!"

"No it isn't!"

"Yes it is!"

"No it isn't!  . . . "

Not having that elementary school dialogue with anybody. Verifiable facts, rational argument, inductive and deductive reasoning . . . Adults talking to and listening to each other. No need to agree with each other, the point is to reach an understanding of each other. That usually involves asking--and answering--questions. This kind of argument or discussion can lead to both understanding and respect, even without agreement.

If somebody only asks questions, but won't answer them, it could be they just don't know what they're talking about. Or they're somehow embarrassed by the answers they might have to give.

Hi, this link could be very repetitive to what Jack sent from the NY Times. I can't read the Times on that link so sorry if this is the same info.. Its heartbreaking that little liam was traumatized being taken by ICE. Now he is home again...Love, Joanie   Pay close attention to what Judge Biery said about the tactics of ICE going after these immigrants.

Weather continues cold here in Miami. And yes, the cold iguanas really do fall out of the trees.

Just an FYI for old friends of Jennifer Harting. Her husband David Siktberg passed away this last Saturday. Just a year short of 30 years of marriage.

Nori, you have been suckered by a legendary con-man.

How can you tolerate these petty assholes such as Lindsay Graham who wants 10 million of government money because the dates of his phone calls were given to Jack Smith?  The dates of his phone calls! Not the content. Not what was said. The dates. He wants 10 million (nice round number pulled out of thin air) because Jack Smith learned the DATES Lindsay Graham called Trump. Is that the best way our money should be spent?

And what about the felon demanding $10 BILLION (nice round number pulled out of thin air) because his tax files were leaked. So instead of going about finding the leaker, he’d rather bankrupt the IRS and take 10 BILLION of OUR money out of OUR government, which could be used for - everything!  Is that the best way OUR money should be spent? Since the entire budget of the IRS is $11.2 billion, I guess Trump wants to bankrupt them? Oh wait. They found the leaker, Charles “Chaz” Littlejohn, who’s still in jail for his crime. I guess that’s not enough when you’re as vengeful as the felon.

Don’t you dare tell me this is The Art of The Deal! The man is sick, depraved and cares nothing about American citizens.

Kristi Noem declared moments after Alex Pretti's murder, before having seen the video, that Pretti "arrived at the scene to inflict maximum damage on individuals and to kill law enforcement”, that he was “an assassin” who “tried to murder federal agents,” that he was "“brandishing a gun". Stephen Miller added that Pretti was “an assassin” who “tried to murder federal agents,”. JD Vance reposted that, and Bovino chimed in that it “looks like” Pretti “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.”  None of this was true then or now. These are the highest officials in our government making wild, uncorroborated, and ultimately false statements. What are we, some third-world banana republic??? I know you're ever so interested in "thorough investigation of each fatal circumstance, with evidence collected & illuminated". How does that sit with the responses of our government?

And one little thing about the felon's campaign promise to get rid of the worst of the worst undocumented criminals. How's that working out?  Throughout his eight years in office (FY 2009–2016), the Obama administration deported more than 3 million noncitizens. This number made him the president with the highest number of deportations in U.S. history. The majority were turned away at the border. Of those detained by ICE in the interior of the US, 90% were criminals. In the felon's second term so far in 2025 and 2026 75% of detainees had no criminal record.

You're being conned by the best of them.

Sorry to hear about Jennifer Harting losing her husband. I never knew Jennifer, but I send my sympathies. We're entering a time in our lives when these sad reports will become more common but always sad and always a shock.

The Washington Post has been gutted. Is this a great country--or what?

I was sad to learn of the death of Jennifer Harting's husband.  I considered Jennifer a friend at BCC, and I was glad that she found longtime happiness with her 3rd husband.

Sometimes we learn of the death of relatives of classmates.  On January 23, I went to the funeral of our classmate Lynn Dulin's sister Pat (BCC 1966).  Lynn came from California.  Lynn's husband, Fred, died a couple of years ago, after the last years of his life were wasted with Alzheimer's.  They had no kids.  I have maintained contact with Lynn, whom I have known since the 3rd grade.  I knew Pat for probably 50 years, but had barely met their brother Stuart (BCC 1967).

Although I don't know it to be so, I suspect that, of the 500 or so classmates still alive, there is someone with a living parent.  (My parents died decades ago.)  Of course that is surprising.  In 1965-6, I had a relationship with a girl from the BCC class of 1961.  She died in 2021 at 77, long after our relationship, and was survived by both parents.  Her father died at 101, and her mother is still alive at 103.

Back in an "or what" era again, Robert, I'm afraid. As AI slop pervades the social media environment, left and right, trustworthy information sources become fewer but far more important.

David was a very pleasant guy, Tom, and they seemed very happy together. I was close to both Jennifer and sister Kat in high school and through the decades after.

I've now outlived by my dad and his dad by 20-25 years. Neither ever got much medical attention, both died of strokes in their 50s. My brothers and I all have high blood pressure and cholesterol, controlled completely by meds, all in our 70s. Don't tell me modern science/medicine doesn't work! Now happily on Covid vax #8, I think!

Last day in Florida, kayaking in the mangroves. Hugely different from the Everglades and the mangrove swamps where I've worked in Chiapas. Only a couple of miles from downtown Miami, the mangroves themselves their usual green, dense, swampy selves; but the wildlife, the birds, EVERYHERE! Hard to take a picture of an egret without an ibis in it, a great blue heron without a yellow-crowned night heron. Hundreds of turkey vultures. Fortunately we had a guide to point them out and identify them.

A few pix. I'm restraining myself.

Paddling into the stilt-rooted world of Los Manglares.

Some of the residents:

American White Ibis (really, MAGATs, not a furriner Ibis. And it's WHITE!)

Green Iguana--call ICE, an immigrant!

Green Heron. Citizen.

Turkey vultures.

Brown pelican. Carries his U.S. passport all the time because he's a brown pelican.

Just finished my nineteenth year playing senior softball in The Villages Florida. This is the team picture for the "Jets" at the end of the Fall 2025 season. Can't believe I lasted this long doing this silliness. Am now in my twentieth year in the Winter season 2026. There has been some interference from the weather as the cold fronts have extended down to central Florida causing delays and cancellations to scheduled games in January and early February. For you northerners, can you please keep your crummy winter weather up north where it belongs??!!?? By the way, I am the dork in the blue shorts if you don't recognize me.

Jack, Thanks for the article about the US skier Kenworthy. I love his very personal message in the ice.  They are killing Americans and hurting immigrants who for the most part have NO criminal record.  Even a 5 year old and a 2 year old are not immune from their cruelty. Of course the children represent the worst of the worst criminals.  Love, Joanie

Joanie, I and I suppose other honest men would entertain doubts about the physical possibility of creating such a message by hand, so to speak. Maybe in cursive?

Yes Jack.  Also i think the color of the writing in the ICE is a clue🤣🤣🤣❤️
