Happy Birthday, Karen! My husband, Mike, spent most of his childhood in Spokane, where his father ran a foundry. For his birthday, I gave him a copy of a new novel I had seen reviewed in the NY Times set in your neck of the woods, "So Far Gone," by a writer who lives in Spokane, Jess Walter. I thought he would have fun reading something that mentions favorite childhood haunts like Loon Lake, where he and his siblings used to picnic and swim on Sunday afternoons. However, he seems unimpressed so far as he slowly works his way through it; he's more of a nonfiction fan. But maybe you would enjoy it, now that you're a seasoned Spokanian.
