I think the Mystery of Elizabeth Jones has been solved.  A Classmate knew that she lived on the corner of Florence and Maizefield, that her Dad worked for the Railroad because his Dad also worked there.  He actually had an old City Directory and it listed her  Moms   name as Anita. Somehow someone got the name of her High School wrong but I just wanted to make sure we had the right person before we put her in the In Memory Section, thanks a bunch Mike!

Hi Barb,

Thanks to you and the other classmates helping to get this reunion together - and for the detective work in locating people who we have "lost.' Yes, that Elizabeth Jones, was our classmate and graduated with us from BHS. For several years after we graduated, she sent birthday cards to some of us.

Patti

So glad the Elizabeth Jones mystery was solved!  Good Idea, Barb, to seek help by putting it out here on this website.

I saw this picture on Facebook today and it was taken in 1949.  I remember some of you talked about a Miss/Mrs. Appleyard and she's in the picture.  I wrote the names down from left to right and they are Rena Ellis, Freda Resor, Helen Hunter, Lucille Thompson, Lois Appleyard, Leska Marshall, Mildred Thompson, Marge  Twomey and Macie Tappe.  I know Miss Twomey and Miss Tappe were teachers at Irving so I'm assuming this was a group from some of the Grade Schools. They were making stuffed toys for children.

Thanks for the pictures of State Farm Park,

My dad worked for SF, so we had membership there. The swiming as I recall opened Memorial day and closed Labor day. They had many other sports available as well such as tennis, fishing, and more. There had very nice picnic areas that we also enjoyed. One of my favorite things was to watch the SF fast pitch softball team play. They had their own stadium and played many teams from around the area. I think it has been over 60 years since I was there as I moved to Florida and then New Jersey and now Texas. I would love to come back for the reunion, but we will be traveling out of the country.

Two clothing stores from the past, the first was Marbens which was located at the Southeast corner of Front and Center Streets.  If you were "big and tall" this was the place to go.

The next was West Side Clothing which was on West Washington Street.  I remember they used to carry OshKosh B'gosh brand of clothing among others.  The building is still there but the store went out of business several years ago.

I tried to wish you a special day yesterday for your birthday, Barb, but my computer skills must have been lacking something.  Looks like they are back with me today, so Happy Belated Birthday!  Hope it was special!  And, yes, we all appreciate your class website efforts since we lost Milan.  Thank you for that!

Hi Classmates,

West Side Clothing:  We used to shop there for our jeans, Levi's, the first kind of jeans made. The most popular jeans in the 1960's were the bootcut and bell bottoms, remember them! 👖

State Farm Park:  THE place to hang out in the summer, OUR home away from home. We were there when the park opened, used baby oil and iodine as our suntan lotion, ate frozen snickers, and left at 5:00 just in time to make it home for supper, Fun in the Sun memories. 😎🌞

I have misplaced the information for the class reunion.  Wher do I send my money for two to attend thr reunion?

Ira, you can sign up on the website.  On the Home page on the left hand side there is a 60th Reunion icon. Click on it and it will take you to the registration form and just follow the prompts.  It's really easy and then all you have to do is mail me your check, or, if you want to just mail your check to me it's Barb Menken, 3003 E. Washington St.,Bloomington, Il.61704.  If you have trouble let me know and I'll be glad to help.

Hi, Barb, you mentioned State Farm Park a while ago.

State Farm Park!!!  So many fond memories, swim team practices and meets, day camp activities: tennis, croquet, badminton, and across the lake under the trees--handicrafts, making lanyards, etc. I made so many colorful ones over the years.(My mom worked at the handicraft tables each summer, as many other teachers did, working throughout the daycamps, some as swimming coaches.)  It was a magical place for me.

One memorable 4th of July event was the greased watermelon race.  Two teams of us were between the two piers and a watermelon was pushed into the middle, and the team that could get the watermelon to their pier would win. The splashing, thrashing swimmers trying to find the watermelon soon became too scarey for me, so I slowly swam to the edge of the fray.

However, much to my surprise and delight, the melon popped up right in front of me.  I immediately pushed it back under, with noone seeing that I had it, and began to slowly advance to our pier while keeping the watermelon underwater.. Once I arrived, I yelled, "We won!!!" and let the watermelon float up so everyone could see it.  It took awhile before the thrashing stopped, and, astonished, they could see that I actually did have it. My team had won!!!

That is one of my favorite memories at State Farm Day Camp.

Thanks to everyone of you readers and contributors, and, of course, most of all to Barb.  I thoroughly enjoy everyone's contributions.

Susie

Susie, I couldn't resist adding a memory of good old S F Park.  It involves your mother, on one of our breaks from life guard duty we would maybe read a book. One day your mother came up to me and said are you aware that you move your lips  while reading.  I said no, she said that is a "no no"!!  I guess a teacher is always a teacher. She was a great person.  And, yes I still have one of the whistle holders   Tom Chambers (Chili)
