Susie Dowell (Emery)

Tom, thanks so much for the fond memory about my mom. I hope other people will share memories of their times at S F Park.

Other activites that I enjoyed were the overnights on the hilly lawn above the lake. Tom, do you remember playing "Steal the Flag" after it got dark?

I found these in the back of my copy of 1962 AEPIX the envelope was never opened unit July 22 2022. I wonder how they're stored today. Is there a computer around that can read cards? How much the grading system has changed. I wish I could be that smart nowadays.

Two photos of former Grocery Stores in Bloomington.  The first is of the Eisner Store which was located on South Main and Miller Street.  A Denny's Donut is located in a newer building on the same site.

The next picture is of the A&P  which was located on Locust Street.  I remember they were located on Main Street where Leath Furniture went in after the new store was built.  My Mom did her weekly shopping there and it was the Cadillac of grocery stores when it first opened.

The church to the right of the AP store was Wesley Methodist that was in the process of bilding a new facility on East Washington St accross from BHS. I believe they moved in 1952.

Janice Scott (Vitton)

This is my first posting on this website.  I attended BHS for only my Senior year having previously attended secondary schools in Urbana and Kankakee.  Little did I know at that time, Bloomington would truly be a life changing experience for me.  The teachers and students in my classes were friendly and helpful. One teacher I found to be particularly inspirational was Margaret Means.  Her approach to teaching earth science was a unique methodology of individualized and independent learning. That teaching style would become very important and popular in subsequent decades.  At Bloomington high school, the extra curricular activities were outstanding and were instrumental in helping to create an overall positive attitude in the student body.  I remember my first day at BHS,  going through the front door and up the stairway. when I reached the first landing and looked up toward the second floor hallway,  I noticed the prettiest girl walking past with a couple of friends wearing a skirt and carrying books clutched to her chest. I didn't see her the remainder of the year.  It wouldn't be until three years later in the "Cage" at ISU that I met her with two or three of her friends. It was Janice Scott. They were planning a Sprng Break to Fort Lauderdale, Florida but had no transportation.  I said maybe I could drive my Mom's car,  a '57 Chevy.  As it turned out I could take the car and the other student's parents actually let them go.  There were parental discussions before the trip plans were finalized.  Janice and I made a friends connection on that trip that eventually turned into our marriage.  Our 55th Anniversary is tomorrow, June 29th. Janice has strong family values anchored in her Christian beliefs and her own upbringing.  Her family has always been very supportive.  Besides being a great Mother and Grandmother, Janice is a great friend to others and stays in touch with her high school friends.  She has always been a great support for our family and has my deepest respect.  That very pretty young girl I saw in the hallway at BHS is now a beautiful woman.  For me, Bloomington High Scool was a life changing experience.  Janice Scott Vitton, you are my best friend, the love of my life, Happy Anniversary.  Jerry

The parking garage was later used  by Champion Federal for employee parking when I worked there in the 80's.

Bill Butler will be missed.  His observations were personal, well written, and with a sense of  humor.

Margret  Means was my favorie teacher ,and her Earth Science class was my favorite.  She put a spark in me for love of Mother Earth. For example,  I continued with classes at ISU in weather and climate, and am a dangerous  weather geek with a backyard weather station.  May she always rest in peace watching those cumulus clouds in the sky.

This was shown on another website and I thought it was very interesting.  It's the three different YMCA's that Bloomington has had. The first is the one we all grew up which was located on East Washington and East Street.  It is now none other than a parking lot!

The City Fathers decided they needed a new Mens Y  and in 1972 this building was opened.  I was working at the Title Company at the time and several businesses either had to relocate or go out of business because of this which I always felt was unfair.  Apparently the construction of the building was not what it was supposed to be.

The last picture is the "New Y" which is scheduled to open in a couple of weeks.  It's located on East Washington Street across from State Farm Corporate Headquarters.fr

Here is a very busy South Center Street between Washington and Front Streets, I can't believe all the businesses that were on the Wesr side of that block.

This is the North side of East Front  between Main  and East Streets, it too was a really busy place.

Barb.

Your picture of the old YMCA  on Washington street brought back memories of my mother enrolling me in swimming lessons there.  At the time they had young boys swim in the nude.  Being modest I told my mother I was not going back.  So, I became self taught to swim at Miller Park and by sneeking into the Rowe gravel pits on west Market street.  I did not drown nor was I arrested.

For those of you who went to Irving School, this is the one I went to and loved.

This picture was on Facebook today of the first day of school at Irving, quite a change!  I like the old one better.
