Remember the escalator in Kresges, it was a big deal in Bloomington because it was the only one at that time.

For you people who went to Franklin School, here's a picture of Mikes Market, the best Sugar Cookie place in town.

Dear Barb,

Thank you for the birthday wishes!  Not only is it, Ward D. Day πŸŽ‚ but more importantly, it is the 79th anniversary of D Day when "we" stormed ashore in France and turned the tide in WWII.πŸ«‘πŸ™

Barb, I wanted to say that I have been busy and a little bit behind on commenting on some of your great posts.

Regarding Krogers, on east OIakland, my brother Ron and I worked there part time during school.  We were right by the Bungalo Restaurant right across the street, Steak and Shake right up the street and the Coca Cola bottleing company.

I was very familiar with the central Fire Station, as my Father worked there for 29 years and retired at the rank of Captain .  I got to eat in their kitchen several times, slide down the fire pole, and I also was able to use the firing range in the basement of the fire station.   Can you imagine being able to do that these days??

I was only in the Green Mill Restaurant once, that I recall.  Other restaurants that I occasionally visited were  the Jefferson Cafeteria, Federal Cafe, Cotton's Village Inn, and Rudats.

Thanks for the posting of pictures from the last breakfast at Shannon's.

ALLAN

A post from Phil Hershey.

Larry thanks for thinking I”m still cool. I think all of us from the Class of 62 are cool. I did go into the Inn occasionally when some of us rode bikes to the lake and stopped and got cokes. Never ate there without my parents so that may have hurt my cool kid status.

Barbara (Kincaid) Menken and I met Friday a.m. at Paneras in Bloomington. We had such a nice visit talking about this and that and the good old times in Bloomington. Barb shared pictures and stories from her husband's trip to Washington, D.C. on an Honor Flight. Their son accompanied him, truly a memorable moment in time for the 75 veterans and their travel companions. We thank them and gratefully appreciate their service to our country. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²

Who remembers the Steak n Shake on Hannah Street?  I had just got my Drivers License and of course the cool thing to do was go through their parking lot to see who was doing what.  I was driving a 1954 Station Wagon with a stick shift and wasn't real good at it, needless to say, I popped the clutch and I was through that parking lot in four leaps, not one of my finer moments.

Did any of you ever get to go to Sreids Restaurant, I never had the opportunity.

Yep, my sister worked there about the 1959 time frame Barb.  Pretty sure I ate way too much Steak and Shake food in my life!

Barb,  Yes, it was fun to back in and see who drove through the Steak n Shake.  I loved their lemon freeze, Chile Mac and steak burgers.  Steak n Shake was founded by Gus Belt in 1934 in Normal, Illinois.  Patty's grandmother loved Steak n Shake and she would take us there as a treat when we visited Bloomington.
Best, Cork n Patty

Oh, yes!  Learning to drive a stick shift... especially as you approached a railroad track on an incline!   I remember practicing by going in and our of our driveway about a hundred times.  A drive through Steak and Shake didn't cost anything (other than gas), unless you stopped to make a purchase.  But with a car full of girls, it was fun to just pass through to see who was there and what was going on.

Nothing like cruising down main street from the Normal S&S to the Bloomington S&S. Trying to drag race from the last light to get to the lane over the bridge over the RR tracks, My 36 Plymouth 5 window coupe with a flathead 6 and 3 speed stick on the floor could lay some rubber if you popped the clutch but that was it no speed. It was fun to just sit in either one of the S&S's and have a coke and burger checking out the cars and the passengers. When we lived in Florida they had S&S. When we moved to Dallas the opened a number of them and we went to them for several years until they menu and quality changed. Still think the burgers were good, the fries were excellent and the shakes were the best. Thanks Barb for posting the pictures and bringing back some good memories.

Streids Restaurant: My Aunt Lillie, my Mom's sister, worked at the restaurant.

We were married on July 29. 1967, at Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington. Our reception was held at Streids. Back in the "day", there was no sit-down or buffet dinners. Our menu consisted of cake, punch, nuts, and mints, a great day had by all.πŸ‘°πŸ€΅

Steak & Shake: Cruising up and down Main Street was the place to be on a Saturday night, hamburgers at the S&S in Bloomington then driving to the Normal S&S for the fries, the latest news and gossip were exchanged along the way. πŸŸπŸ”

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. 🌞

Anybody remember the name of this Church?  It was located on East and Jefferson Street but I can't remember the name.  If I remember right there was a little restaurant in there and I think I had a bowl of chili, what a strange thing to remember!  Withers Library was on the other end of the block.

This Church I do remember because I sat in class at Irving School and had a perfect view of it, it was St. Marys.

Since no one was able to help me on the name of  Church,  I dug around and found out it was the First Presbyterian Church which I understand is no more.  Second Presbyterian was in the  next block so now you know and can all sleep better!
