We certainly can relate to "The Older then Dirt Quiz" or at least most of them.

45 RPM records: I still have some 45 records and albums from way back then. I gave all my Beatles albums to our grandson, P.J., age 15.
We no longer have a record player, so why do I keep the records? Nostalgic? I still have the yellow disk for the 45's so they could play on the record player.πŸ’ΏπŸ“€

Green Stamps: Our family saved them, the children licked them. Our Mother would buy mostly kitchen items like silverware or knives.🍴πŸ”ͺ

It was good to hear from Tom (Chili) Chambers knowing other people enjoy keeping up with the class of 1962.πŸ€—

This is just a beautifully written piece; and so true.  Take a couple of minutes to read it.  You'll be glad you did.

A WINTER FRIEND

This article is so befitting for all of us... take time to ponder... the last statement cannot be refuted:-

I FIRST STARTED READING THIS EMAIL AND WAS READING FAST UNTIL I REACHED THE THIRD SENTENCE.  I STOPPED THEN AND STARTED OVER, READING SLOWER, AND THINKING ABOUT EVERY WORD...  IT MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK.
So, please    READ SLOWLY!

AND THEN IT IS WINTER
You know time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.  It seems like yesterday that I was young, just married, and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all those years went.

I know that I lived them all.  I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.    But, here it is... the winter of my life, and it catches me by surprise... How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those "older people" were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey... they move slower and I see an older person in myself now.   Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change... Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day!  And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory!  Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so... now I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!!   But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last... this I know, that when it's over on this earth... it's over.   A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets.  There are things I wish I hadn't done... things I should have done, but indeed, there are also many things I'm happy to have done.   It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet... let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think.  So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly!  Don't put things off too long!!  Life goes by quickly.  So, do what you can TODAY, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!

You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life... so, LIVE FOR TODAY and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember.. and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!

"Life" is a GIFT to you.  The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after.   Make it a fantastic one.

Remember:   "It is Health that is real Wealth and not pieces of gold and silver."

~Your kids are becoming you......but your grandchildren are perfect!
~Going out is good.. coming home is even better!
~You forget names... but it's OK, because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything.... especially golf.
~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.

~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep."
~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..
~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"...???
~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless?!"
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear.

~But "Old" is good in some things:
Old Songs, Old movies ...
and best of all, our dear ...OLD FRIENDS!!

Stay well, "OLD FRIEND!"

That was a good read.  Thank you, Barb, for that piece and for all that you do for us.  Just a note:  I prefer to refer to friends, not as "old", but as "long-time" friends. wink

Anyone remember this building?  I think it was behind the Church I showed on here several weeks ago, the First Presbyterian because that looks  like Gummerman  Printing on the corner, that means it was probably  on Monroe Street.

This is the old Corn Belt Bank Building.  The Bank built a new building on East Street, fortunately this one is still standing.  I know it housed some Attorneys, one of them being Mr. Meara, Patty Meara Snearlys Dad.

First Pres that I remember was on the NW corner of East and Grove

Larry, after doing  some checking the First M&E Church was located on the corner of East and  Grove   across from the McBarnes  Building.  The source from where I got the information used to go there and said it became unsafe so they had to find another building.

0Barb, The church you're referencing was on the south side of E Grove  accross from the Rogers Hotel. The First Pres was 118 S East on the N/E corner of that intersction. That's according to the 1929-30 Bloomington City Directory.

Larry, I'm confused.  I'm trying to remember where the 100 block of East Grove even was.  I'm getting my Churches all mixed up.  Thanks for the research and hopefully I'll straighten it out in my mind!

OK, I have it figured out, I was wrong and Larry is right!  Below is a picture of the First Presbyterian Church which was located on the corner of Grove and East.

This is a picture of the old Unitarian Church which I said was the First Presbyterian located on East and Jefferson.  Guess I got some bad information!

My father was the produce mgr. at the Food Circus.  He would take me to work with him, and I remember working the produce section.  He would also take me to buy produce at Capodice down by the railroad tracks, and I remember the trains coming in and the big walk-in coolers.

Anyone remember when this was a grocery store, it's  on the southeast corner of Grove and Clinton.

Did you ever stop for a Hamburger at Green Gables up at Lake Bloomington?  This building burned last year and they just broke ground for a new one.

That grocery at Grove and Clinton was one of the first if not the first to have an automatic door opener. You can't see it in the photo but there were two arms that came out to the sidewalk and you had to slid your hand in front of the electricc " eye" to activate the door. If you weere fast enough you could ride round that orner, activate the door nd be heading south on Clinton before the door opened.

Barb,  I sure do remember Green Gables at Lake Bloomington.  Whenever I stopped there it seemed like Ross was working.  He may have been the owner but he would fire up the grill and cook up a good hamburger for $.30.  Amazing!  I loved going to Lake Bloomington for swimming and fishing.  It seemed like a big lake but much later I discovered it covers only about 500 acres.  Best,  Cork

Barb,

The grocery store on the corner of Grove and Clinton was a Piggly Wiggly (sp?) at one time.  For a time, I had piano lessons from Mrs. Guess just a few doors East of there.  I remember it being a HUGE store at the time!.

Thanks Larry and Jane on the imput on the Piggly  Wiggly. I used to take piano lessons from a Mrs. Campbell who lived on the corner of Clinton and Chestnut Streets and my Mom would sometimes stop at that store on the way home and yes Jane, it seemed huge.  And Larry, I just knew you'd have some knowledge of something different about it!

Barb, again I could not resist to reply to the question about the grocery store. She is correct it was originally

a Piggly Wiggly Store. In facr, my father was the manager of the store in the early to mid 1940's.
