Happy Birthday, Carroll,

Do you remember a favorite birthday you had when you were in high school or gradeschool, or anytime?

Or how will you be celebrating your birthday this year.

Maybe we could start a new tradition on here, to get more people involved. Talk about what you're going to be doing this birthday or a favorite birthday memory you've had.

And anyone could contribute who remembers sharing a birthday with Carroll ( or a special, fun, interesting, exciting memory with her)

or one of our classmates when it is his/her birthday  🎂

Karen Schad,  That was an interesting story about your mom at the Pantagraph and Adlai Stevenson's knowing everybody's name. Did he own the paper then? And also about your mom's difficult decision to stay with her elderly mom. Thanks for sharing. What do you remember about the daycamp?

I'd like to add to Susies suggestions.  I'm sure you have pictures of grandkids, gardens, vacations etc. and we'd love to see them.  If you want to post them on this site all you have to do is hit the Message Forum button.  I usually say what I'm going to say and at the end of the sentence I go to the very top where it gives you options, the first one on the left hand side says source, then the next one looks to me like a picture, hit this one and Image Properties comes up.  You want to Choose File and I use the Photo Library.  Go in and select the picture you want to  use, hit done and upload it, that's all there is to it.  It doesn't go on there until you hit submit so you can practice a few times.  I hope you'll try it and share with us.  I hope this helps but if you have trouble yell.

I enjoy your old pictures.  I recall the old railroad depot.  I left the depot for Great Lakes Training Depot with Loren  Winkelman (Class of 62) on the Navy Buddy Program .  I recall both our mothers in tears as the traiin pulled out.  Ron Williams.

Here are the three Junior Highs which turned the majority of us into one big group.  The first is Irving which was my home from Kindergarten thru 9th grade which by the way has been replaced with a new school.

Next is Bent School and the Terrace on the front of the building has been removed.

And here is Washington School which hasn't changed much over the years.

I kind of fibbed about Washington School not changing much.  I found this picture after I posted the one this morning, it does look a lot different.  I guess you could say "uodated".

Hi again

early in the morning my grandmother, Aunt and my mother would get ready to go to the Train Depit to take the train to Chicago to go shopping!!  First stop was Marshall Field's the top floor sometimes a little pricy but boy drop down to the basement that's where the real deals were..after leaving the store we would stroll through Carson -P Scott & Company...the best time was lunch at The Palmer House...

The second time I took the train was a few years later when I went to Portland, Oregon to work at a ski resort on Mount Hood... a beautiful place... On the employee floor we had a St.Bernard who looked out for us named Bruen Helga...My first jon  was cleaning rooms two employees to a room  We cleaned Jane Piwell's room... what a small person....My next and last position was baby sitting with the person that had leased the resorts, R.L. Kohmstam from N.Y.  Also all the furniture really heavy as made from the trees there.

Susie you mentioned Adalai Stevenson, I sort of remember he either owned The Pantagraph then or had some part of it.... As for State Farm Day Camp....My brother two years younger in one swim class and me in the other.... instructors had a contest to see who could hold their breath the longest and it was me and my brother... haha...loved lunch there and just the whole feeling... also, remember across the lake the picnic area...

My mother loved her mother so so much she just couldn't leave her...she didn't drive and both husbands had died....I believe a widow for 50 years and passing at age of 99....my grandmother was a real card... one of her best friends, Sis Arends, would dress up in old clothes and go to the, believe it was the Railroad Salvage , looking like they were in need to get better prices..

This is a picture of the North side of the square.  Today it is a two way street instead of one way.

Here is a picture of what it looks like today.

Our goal this month was to resume the Breakfast at Shannon's but due to the "wearing of the mask" it sounds like it'd be on more than off.  Hopefully we can get together next month if some of the restrictions on the mask are lifted.

I'll give you a hint on yesterday's picture, it was on on West Oakland and you were one happy camper when you walked out of there if you passed!

I would quess it is the State of Illinois Sec. of States Drivers License facility-  where we all went to get our license to drive after taking Drivers Ed and watching Death on the Highway film in class.

Thanks

Ron Williams, your 100% right.  I remember I flunked my test the first time so my Mom took me to Park Hill Cemetery and made me drive through there for an hour, backing up, parking, you name it, I had to do it but I passed it the next day.

Was this on West Oakland Ave?  I remember the building, think one of our Irving Students lived in that building, if it was on Oakland.   Not far from I think it was Gray's Grocery where they had cold soda pop and plenty of penny candy.

The restaurant was very good to us for 29 years and are we ever thankful we are not in business today with COVID-19 restrictions! It was McLean County's Meeting Place!
