Here is a picture of the Irvin Theater which was razed for a parking lot for Second Presbyterian Church.  That was where I went when I was a kid, they must of had the best "kid movies".

This is the Castle Theatre which is still being utilized.  They have various entertainers come there and perform.

Don't forget that WJBC Radio studios were in the same building with the Castle Theater upper floors for many years.

Thanks, Barbara, for all of the nostalgic photos of the downtown. They bring back fond memories. Rowlands was a favorite for clothes shopping. Was it Klemm's that had the rich, soft licorice? When Mom and I were shopping, we frequently stopped there for "a little energy. "   During the summer after my junior year, I sold clothing in Ensenbergers. An old gentleman operated the antique elevator. Since I was the only young sales person, the manager encouraged me to "model" a different outfit from the store each day, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

My one Memory of Klemms is my Mom went there to buy material to make something.  We got back in that Department and two old lady clerks got in a fight over who was going to wait on her.  I've never heard two people carry on like they did in front of a customer but they won the prize, I was fascinated!

When I was working as a sales clerk in the clothing department at Ensenbergers, I was always shocked at the competitiveness of the clerks who argued over who got the next person that came off the elevator!! I just had a salary so it didn't concern me.

What a fun Blast from the Past!!  The pictures bring back so many memories.  One that I will never forget is wrapping gifts at Livingston's over Christmas vacation.  I think my hands hurt as much by the end of the day then, as they do from the Arthritis I have now-all for $1,00 an hour.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a picture of the Pop  Corn stand by the Castle Theatre which Corky  Snearly said  was run by Jim Miller's Dad.  I thought  at the time how in the world would you make a living doing that but if you look at the bottom of the  Pantagraph   photo you'll see he sold a lot of popcorn but I'll bet it was hard work.. was r J

Thanks, Barb, for your hard work. I love seeing these "old" sites. Btw, Connie, you were wealthy. I made $0.75 an hour working in the men's department at Livingston's. Occasionally they would move me across the aisle to the candy department. Those were the good days.🥰

There's one side of the square which I haven't shown and it's the South side.  Walgreens is now a bar, Livingston's is a restaurant called Michaels, the Bootery was a place where you could get sandwiches and Dewenters has an architectural firm in it, nothing like back in the day.

Remember driving under the Oakland Avenue and Washington Street bridge and honking your  horn a couple of times?  They are no more.

Barbara,  you have posted so many pictures and stories of Bloomington I think I can connect to most. We appreciate the time and effort you take to keep the website going.

1.   Livingston's and their Capezio shoes. Corinne Rusk and I had several pairs. They had sweaters and skirts to match. We would trade outfits with each other. There was a light blue, yellow, and peach color I can remember.

2.   The Irving theater. I was meeting several friends at the movies on my 13th birthday. My mom dropped me off. I gave the ticket person a dollar. He gave me back $0.75. I said I will have you know that I am 13. He took back $0.50 leaving me only a quarter to spend on candy and popcorn when I could've had $0.75. 13 and older were considered adults.

3.  Ensenbergers. Our first living room furniture came from Ensenbergers. We bought a couch, two chairs, two lamps, and two end tables. They even delivered them to North Aurora. I still have one of the lamps today, 53 years later.  My sister, Janenne, and I used to babysit Dorothy Ensenberger TeVoert's six children and are still friends today with the family.

4.  State Farm Park, my summer home.  My birthday is in June and I usually got a new bathing suit and my summer clothes then. We would go almost every day to the park, use baby oil as our suntan lotion, and enjoy the afternoon. I love summer! We had fun times, too, at Lakeside diving/jumping off their two diving boards, one was very high and ice-skating on the lake in the winter.

5.  Shopping.  I can remember shopping at all the stores on the Square. On Saturday we would walk from Towanda Avenue to downtown and buy a 45 RPM record for $.49 and then they went up to $.99. I still have a few of those records.

6.  Jerry  and I would be interested in a 60th class reunion in 2022. If we can be of any assistance, let us know. So many great connections, keep them coming. Thanks for the birthday wishes, too.

When I think of The National Bank of Bloomington I always think of this building.  That whole block had so many interesting businesses in them from Banks to Clothing  Stores to  Drug Stores and to top it off, the Fannie  Mae Shop. pl
