Jumping ahead to current times. In looking through the profiles people have updated, I have noticed a lot of people with a Harley. We are a Harley family also. Who would have thought 30 years ago that a Minnesota Middle Class Suburban High School would produce so many "HARLEY BIKERS!"

Two more places for y'all - Clarkes Submarine Shop - right on 98th, across from Ben Franklin, and the Red Barn on 89th and Penn.....both were great food!

And let's not forget Lyn-Del Lanes Bowling Alley - sadly gone from the corner along with the Legion - across the street from David Fong's which is still doing a thriving business.

As for tonight at Major's - there's nothing formal set up, just a bunch of people who have been getting together the last couple of years after golfing. I don't have a list of people it's whoever shows up, so I hope a lot of you will show especially if you are not going to the reunion - it would be great to see you!

And for those of you that haven't been to Major's before, the parking lot is always packed, and be careful not to park in adjacent lots - there are signs, and they WILL tow.

Steve,

I remember the horse rides behind Walsh's and the back entry seemed to be such a long dirt road.

I also remember my dad getting pissed at me whenever he let me push the shopping cart. Every time I seemed to let my mind wander and clip his heels.
After having my own kids now, I know why he got pissed...........ouch!

Adam Lee mentioned a Dairy Queen on 95th and Lyndale. I have no recolection of that one , but I DO vividly remember the one on Portland ave and the south 494 frontage road behind the gas station.

I remember my dad bringing my little sister and I up there as kids and giving me 2 dimes for 2 dime cones.
When I ordered them, the total came to 21 cents. I told my dad what happened and he said "You were supposed to order them seperate so you don't have to pay any tax!!"
..........................1 penny............He's still like that.

I also remember ordering Old Fashioned Sodas in the tall parfait glasses

...and before it was Clarke's Submarine Shop it was Henry's Hamburgers...

How about the old A&W Drive In that was on 494 somewhere? I remember the glass mugs they served their rootbeer in. My mom still has one of the little ones they gave out free for little kids (me).

I remember Farrel's ice cream parlor. We use to go there after soccer games. My brother said they always went to Bridgman's but he is older.

I also remeber going to A&W Drive In over by 494 and trying to sneak the mugs out of there.

A&W, 494 and Lyndale. And right next to it were these teeny tiny cabins you could rent out.....the weirdest looking things.

Yes, Red Owl . . . green stamps and the bingo cards you got and had to watch TV to see what numbers got called! How about Little General where Carrier Floral is now, I remember going there before grade school at F. Wilson Pond to get sunflower seeds and bubble gum-Bazooka I do recall! I also remember riding my bike to the corner of Portland and Old Shakopee to buy corn.

The A&W was on Lyndale
My brother worked there and brought the Root Beer home in Gallon jugs...............WAY better than the cans and bottles of today.
Speaking of pop, anybody remember going to the Pop Shoppe in Richfield
across from the Hub??

Great pop, tons of flavors

A&W was 494 & Lyndale. John you said horses in the back of Walsh's. That brought up a memory of them setting up a little petting zoo type thing in the back for all the kids. Only once? Maybe twice.

Lyn-Del Lanes I got up nerve & asked Laurie Robertson out on my very 1st date we went there bowling. We rode our bikes & my brother tagged along! What a buz kill!!

I know antique Bloomington but where is Majors in new Bloomington just in case it works out?

08/15/08 03:43 PM #285

Charles S. Steve Helman

Steve,

Majors is over off of 100 and 494, I think it's the old stone wings. South East corner...

I wondered if anyone remembered that vegetable stand on the corner of Portland & Old Shakopee. That whole block was a cornfield from 98th to 96th. My dad used to fly kites there with my brother & I when we were little. (He used to tell us how to avoid tax by buying things separately too!) And the library! When did it change to Pierce Skate & Ski? I totally forgot about Harpo's & Harris Feed. I think I still have an A & W mug at home - I believe we went there on Friday nights to find out where the parties were going to be on Saturday night at some point. I've lived away from Bloomington for longer than I lived there - so trying to remember this stuff is giving me a headache!

The old "gas station" place that was next to Bloomington Drug/Walsh's was owned by a famous ball player's dad. wasnt it!? It was there for years, and did have that dirt diveway-road that ran along that side of the building. ( Maybe was a gas station in the really oldent days!)

Yes, we went to the A& W at 494 and Lyndale too, always got the freebie "baby mugs"..wanted a big one.

For those that were wondering where the DQ was, it was in the space where they put the Wendy's, near the side of freeway ford..

And Ben Franklin, king of the 5c items! I always saved my money for the big perfume purchase there " Blue Waltz" what a scent!

And Snyder's drug that was there for years, with that clothing store in the corner too......

And Blasko....where have you been!? You were one of the original Riverside - Oak Grove- JFK werent you!!! You may have remembered info on Ralph, wouldnt you? You couldnt have lived in fear of him, you could have swatted him with one back hand!

Harris Feed store had the BEST peanut brittle, and chocolate covered peanuts too!

PDQ was there when Kennedy was around. Their grand opening was somewhere in the years when we were in elementary school still......Old Piper Inn had the greatest tasting pizza, all the sauce and meat was under the solid layer of cheese....they they always cut their pizzas in Squares.

I dont know about you all, but when I was a kid, Bush Lake was still the lake to go to, until we discovered Crystal Lake...out past Burnsville.

Was that the Alice Cooper concert when the tear gas bomb went off? That was bummer! Trying to run with your eye's closed to get out of the civic center. It was right during "School's Out" go figuire. That was one time being up by the stage wasn't a good thing. The seats were all empty when it was felt by the people up front & the band. It was one of the last general admission concert I think they had.

Major's is the old Stonewings or what we used to call Menopause Manor. Not so funny now!

How about the France Ave Drive In?!! Sneaking people through using the trunk!

Pierce Skate and Ski!! Yikes! Kathy Moe and I worked there, actually I think I only lasted like a week.

I don't even remember the Good Will store?! And I really feel old after recently learning that a co-worker grew up in Bloomington too. I asked him if he remembered sneaking into the France Ave Drive-In and he gave me a strange look. It was then that I realized he was born in about 1976. AAaaaaarrrgghh!
