Steve E has promised to represent me at the Fireman's Tournament. He has the silly thing down so I feel well represented.

As for the 50 B-Day I vote for Fort Hunter Liggett in Central CA. Johnny G can vouch for it. Or the Fireman's Tournament like Steve said.

So to go totally off topic, I have been trying to find accurate plans for a box hockey game. Do you remember those? Can someone go to Valley View or somewhere and take some measurements. First person with accurate plans will get a really good pizza burger recipe.

Box hockey!

Yeah I remember that game, . . . it was a real blast to play during the summer months at the nearby park and rec. Great memories!

They don't have that here in Hawaii, but ten years ago I built one for my kid and the neighboring kids to play. I showed them how to play the various games, and they tried it a couple times but it never took off. They quickly lost interest and the box just rotted in the rain. : (

Bret, good luck finding the original plans and dimensions.

Box hockey! Funny, I had forgotten about that game and then this semester, somehow it came to my head and I mentioned it to my class of Minnesotans....THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF IT. Yikes...there are too many X Box's out there!

Adam and Kirk, Another thing to add to the list of things I don't remember are the names of the box hockey games we played. Can either of you remember all or some of them? Adam, from your previous answer I am guessing you may remember some of these.

I have found one place, by googling that has incorrect plans that show the center "ice" openings on the playing surface in the wrong place. They also use plywood instead of steel for the playing surface. If the overall dimensions are correct I can fix the rest. Does 2 feet 6 inches wide by 6 feet long sound right?

Hmmm, i remember the "box" was open (the floor was the asphalt) and it was all two by six's. Six feet long sounds about right, but 2 feet 6 inches does not seem wide enough. i started drawing a picture of it in class and could not remember all the holes. yikes, call the city of bloomington and call an old geezer who works there. they may know of someone that remembers that...it sures seemed like those were "home made" deals.

you could play either fast or slow. i don't remember anything other than that....but i do remember there always seemed to be a line up to play....i would go to Riverside and play.

not sure that helps your cause Bret...

I thought the 6 foot by 2' 6" sounded wrong. The plans I found are here: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/catalog/4h/4-h4423f.pdf scroll down to the 4th project (of 4).

This one is close to how I remember them except the size and where the holes are on the center board. The current versions of the game seem to have multiple sections where from what I remember there were only 2 sections. I remember a steel bottom and we would throw sand in there to make it a little faster.

Sounds interesting. I suppose there were different types even back then. The thing about it is, you can make it anyway you wish. :-)

When you get it done, why don't you bring it with you to the 50th BD bash... ;-)

Oh, thanks for that memory, I loved box hockey, even girls back then loved a good face off! kw

I remember box hockey. There were a few different games. Fast, slow, cheatin' in your own box, hands (no sticks...many slivers in the fingernails!!)tops, where you had to keep the stick on the top of the puck when you shot. My husband made one for our kids when they were younger but it was not the way I remember. The holes were in the wrong spot and it was much smaller. What a blast!!

Hi Bret, the middle board has 3 holes in it 1 on top to hold the puck for the faceoff and 2 holes on the bottom 1 on each side to shoot to the single holes for the 'goal' on either end, dimensions i have no idea. seems we had open bottoms and played on asphalt or concrete!

Wow, my spacecraft did not land in your town of Bloomington until 1973 (although I claimed to be from Chicago). I wonder how I missed the whole box hockey thing and I am very into hockey (tough being a blackhawk fan, but getting better). After reveiwing the websites. it looks like alot of fun. Hopefully I can play when I am there next week!

Bret, I recall the center piece of wood equally dividing the box hockey into two playing fields, and the center piece had three cut outs just as Doug described above: on top where the puck was placed for the face off; and two on the bottom where the cut outs were at opposing ends of the center piece wood where it meets the box perimeter walls.

The bottoms were made of aluminum, and yes we also tossed a little sand into the box to allow the puck to slide really fast across the surface. Sometimes the puck flew across so fast, that upon exiting via the goal hole, the puck would continue across the playground pavement outside the box hockey game and we'd have to run and retrieve the puck!

Karen was right: We could play with sticks where we'd drag the puck up to the center wall in either the far or near hole, carefully aim and then shoot, or play without sticks and merely use our hands and risk getting slivers from the worn out wood edges.

And the variety of games was endless because we could make up all sorts: one drag shot; one drag two putts, etc. Little kids could call the game type to allow them a better chance at playing the older, seasoned players, and it was possible for little kids to actually beat the bigger kids!

Dimensions of the box hockey are hard for me to remember because everything seemed bigger when we were little. But six feet long and two and a half wide sounds about right.

And yes, if you build it, you gotta bring it to the 50th Birthday bash! We'll have a tournament. That's probably one sport we could all participate in without much training and not suffer sore muscles and joints the next morning. : )

Bret:

Here's a four year old blog between two individuals seeking box hockey info from Bloomington Park and Rec, and they mention a guy who works there and gave his email address for inquiries on box hockey in Bloomington. Check it out and good luck.

Also, I looked at that Oregon 4H web address you mentioned earlier, and yeah . . . the placement of the bottom holes in the middle partition are different from what we're used to. Our box hockey games had the bottom holes further out to the perimeter edges.

I loved box hockey - we played all the time down at Bryant Park. We had the aluminum bottom and would throw sand on it. As I remember there was "2 Shot Foul" and "Fast Game" (lots of bruises with that one). Great memories!

See everyone Friday night at Fireman's!

Adam, I agree 6 feet by 2 1/2 feet seems right from the "big people world". I played at Assumption Lutheran. More than likely there were several versions. We should build one at the 50 B-Day party & play.

07/07/09 12:06 AM #911

Bret C. Corbin

If there is box hockey at the 50th b-day party I will have to make it. I don't think I can bring the game on the plane though so I will have to count on someone who lives there.

Adam, I saw that forum after a google search and noticed the postings were 4 or 5 years old so I never tried to email the guy.

I was asking about the dimensions for the same reason as others here have mentioned. Everything seemed bigger when we were littler. Add to that the whole guy/measurement thing and who knows how it would turn out. I guess I will make a cardboard mock-up first and see what that looks like.

Then of course there are the old table top hockey games. Far better than the vibrating tabletop football games.

Hello Steve and everyone else, it has been a while since I have been on this sight. As for the Firemans I am planning on going. I have sent Aubrey and email and when I get back into town I will ask him again if he wants to go. I have been out of the country and then drove my mom to the beautiful state of Washington. I dropped her off at her sisters and I am sitting at SEATAC waiting to catch the redeye home.

As for the 50th B-Day party I am game for anything..How about Nisswa and Garland can Host it.... maybe I should talk to Jeff before I suggest something like that.

Steve, call me when you get into town and maybe I can take you over to Aubreys and you can help me talk him into going.

Jeff,

That is so crazy! I just responded to a message from Jeff Garland and suggested the exact same thing to him. I think that it would be so much fun! Count me in.

Dona M. Trabant (Inman)

WoW guys!

I leave town for a week and you blow up the forum!
I kinda remember the box hockey, must of been the one i got slapped with the stick in instead of the puck??

Funny you should mention Nisswa, I was just there but forgot to bring Jeff's number with. Next venture up I will be hitting Woman Lake so I gotta remember Lorie B's number!

I REALLY love the idea of Alaska, been wanting an Cruise forever , but they are a bit spendy. Doug V and I have been talking about the great white wonder land. Makes me want to go even more!

We are trying to keep the cost for everyone to the minimum.
Getting to MN is hard enough without tons of dollars or travel time for them too. Then again, I don't want to hunt half of you down and the Portland Blower either!!

Keep the ideas coming, you have fueled the fires now!

SO, It's July now -- when is the next get together???
There is still the baseball diamond at Wrights Lake (aka the swamp!) - we could do a game night??

As for the 50th Got some Great Ideas!!
Firemans pic-nic (Bloom in July)
Concert / State Fair (Aug)
Aquatennial Event- (Mid July)
Twins game - private field (open)-BUT, wont the stadium be a DRY stadium??
All great -- all low cost to all of us
Looked up a river boat rental- they start at 600 hr min 2 hrs but that is for 50-75 people -- we would need the next size up -- a bit of change to raise. Trying to stay close, low to no cost, and maybe a 2 day thing for those that can not make one or the other.

Keep the ideas rolling! The more to choose from the better. THANKS ALL!

dona

Regarding the birthday party, I was being silly with the Alaska/Costa Rica thing. The reality is (I studied reality At the Univ. of Venice) the closer to Bloomington, the better the turn out will be, How about Fong's?

07/07/09 02:43 PM #916

Kathy Supalo (Whalen)

Fong's for Dinner then Parker's Picnic down by the MN River for s'mores/bonfire-anyone!

Another thought.

By next summer, the new Twins stadium will be open and they will have a section out in left field with a "firepit" I heard it is available for private groups (no idea on cost yet) and I think it holds a couple hundred people.

Could be kinda cool. Maybe Hrbek knows someone there that knows more??

Hmmmmm . . . Fong's, bonfires, Twin's game - I think we are on to something!

OK, time to think outside the box.

I just thought of something. Years ago a friend of my ex would set up a company outing on a paddleboat (I think it was the Josiah Snelling) to cruise up and down the Mississippi for about 3 hours. They would hire a Reggae band and it was a great time. So depending on the size of the turnout, that may be an option
