What was the synchronized swimming called? KIPS? That's what I remember Trisha Cook doing.

Sue Ellen M. Peterson (Polson)

It was KIPS and Tricia was really good at swimming. I was in KIPS too and so was Cheryl Brayton, she was really good too! That is so funny!

Does anyone remember Ralph Hostetler from Riverside? The last time I saw him, he was walking down 102nd, smoking a cigarette. Never saw him again.

In sixth grade, Leo Reuder and I were always called on by Ms. Pershern, to go get the movie projector or whatever...he was a great kid. We became friends, though never touched base in junior high.

Oak Grove...yikes. Swim or study? What is a seventh grader to do? Yeah, right.

KISS, 2nd row seats, with Jahnke, Ebeling? and ???. My ears rang for days, as we were right in front of the speakers and Ace. How about the Teen Center? Archangel, Rocking Horse, Lamont Cranston, Mojo Buford and more....

Cyrus....I do remember...

Oh my god the Teen Center! I remember Rocking Horse! Dave Griffith sang in a band called "Aire". I don't know why I remember that!

Did Lamont Cranston really play at the Teen Center? I saw Lamont on a regular basis for years after high school. I don't remember them from my teen years, but have most if their music (on cassette) from the 80's, and still listen to it!

i am pretty sure they did, but....i may be wrong. someone please correct me if i am. Fairchild was another band. they were actually mentioned in the Startribune within the last year.

Going onto Lamont's website, it states they recorded their first two album's in '76 and '77, both in Minneapolis. The third album has a side recorded at the Cabooze. is that where you would see them Lori? i really do believe they played at the teen center.

what does your bro Curt do these days?

Dave G.'s band actually played at Oak Grove for one of our dances! he was in 9th grade playing the trumpet!!!

I remember Ralph Hostetler. Only the (perceived) toughest kid at Riverside. Maybe that was because he started smoking in like 1st grade. His parents lived on 102nd, 1/2 a block before Lyndale. I don't remember him in jr. high though. When did you last see him Kirk? And Hi by the way. Your Gangsta rap was pretty good.

Kirk Talley

i last saw him in either 5th or 6th grade, as i said, walking down the middle of the road, without a (perceived) care in the world.

i started at Riverside in 5th grade, with Cerney, then Pershern. Leo was friend and so was Scott Eichstadt. who did you have as teachers those years? I don't even remember seeing Scott in junior high, but i do remember seeing him at Kennedy. it was so wierd. to be friends and then...boom, different directions.

thanks for the comment on the rap. it was fun.

Steve, do remember the Teen Center bands?

oh yeah, hi back!

The teachers at Riverside....huh I can't put a name to even 1 of them. I know somewhere in a box of pictures are those class photo cards we used to get each year. That would be the only way I could name a teacher. Although when I was in 3rd grade it was a split class. Half 3rd the other half 4th graders.

Scott Eichstadt I'm pretty sure he went off to Portland. He lived on the east side of Riverside & that was kind of a cut off line in there.

Sorry I can't say with certainty that Lamont Cranston played at the Teen Center. We've all hear "Upper Mississippi Shakedown" for so long that it's tough to put a date to it. But I have learned to go with my gut threw the years & the way you wrote that. I guess i'm inclined to go with your gut on that one.

LOL !!! Boy, this forum is great for the soul! I havent laughed so hard in a long time! Kirk, re: Ralph Host. I was so scared of him, I was afraid he was going to kick the crap out of me every day I walked home, alone. We lived just 1 1/2 block away from them. He lived next to the " Famous Kelly family" ( Mike dated my sister Terri for years, and then Paul " A-Gar" was actually in the class of '77.) I dont think they were even friends; they were neighbors! I remember, Ralph had a hamster, that the class had as the class pet. People would take turns taking it home on weekends. I tried to be nice to him, always in fear of my life, hoping that there was more to his soul and he was a victim of his up bringing! I got to take that hamster home one weekend, and he was nice to me then. I think they use to do all kinds of things in the " woods" which was the property my parents owned. It bordered the Pinske property. That is another story, scott woudl always fight us with sticks over that fence! I wondered what ever happened to him too. There was another person I never knew after young childhood, that i thought was probably a good person in there!

Also, why did we always call each other by our last names? I still do that with friends today. I was always known as "franz" and then when I got to OG Jr..I was 'little franz" by some of the upeer classmen there. I remember always referring to Leo as "reuder" and then Dave as " griffith".....we had teachers back then like: Ms Wardell, Ms Pershern, Ms Tiedemen, and then the PE instructor...he seemed to be a little too fond of my sisters! Then when Mr Kramer came there for choir, things changed so well......he was a great addition to Oak Grove.....I was able to be an OG Singer....LOL on the modular system. It seemed to work good for me though, although I spent too many years trying to be Mark Culverson's side kick! He and I would whip through the science projects....remember all the equipment we had, and the bunson burners.....all that at our fingertips! They gave us a lot of chances to start the place on fire, or at least a gas explosion! I soent my feww mods getting my homework done in the "MRC" And Kirk, for many years,I thought the Tally boys were the Cat's meow! In my younger years when we went to the same church, i thought it was neat that your dad was the head minister, so at least you would have to be nice to me. :) Some of those funny memories!

And do you all remember lining up for shots!? The government made sure we all got it in the arm in the community center? Go you chicken fat, go away!

Pete B amd Tom ...thanks for the info on Cyrus...I forgot about that name. I knew Spencer and Lisa would be successful, they have so much talent! Mark C, I think it is funny how you are a minister, that just shows that we never know the paths that we will take!

Do you guys remember Trent Treimer and Mike Gunderson? I think Mike is in the ministry himself. The Gundersons were always long standing members of Oxboro Evangelical Church doen the road from JFK. ( We were members there for years before we swiched to the UMC in Richfield)

To all you swimmers, Girls & Guys that swam for Kennedy... I never realized how great of athletes you were until now. I was never talented enough to do competitive swimming, heck, I almost drowned in Bush Lake when I was around 9....trying to swim out to the dock. Now all my kids are competitive swimmers, and they are quite good. I am just so into and respectful of that sport now. ( It is huge in Texas) I am totally into the Olympics every day, and wish I knew then, what I do know now about the sport....You all were awesome!
I remember cheering for the Boys swimming, we all said how grateful and nice all you guys were..but i didnt even have a clue then as to what it took for you to do that sport! Sorry I was so clueless then, but I say now, WOW!

Wow, all these names from the past! From Ralph Hostetler to Mike gunderson. Whew!

I had Miss Zahradka in 5th grade, I think she only made it one year. Jim Stairs and Bret Servin and Jim Quinn and me and others were not good for her. ONe afternoon Jim and I left our sneakers on the floor so she would have to put them away in our lockers. We were hiding in the lockers and burst out when she opened the door. I thought we would lose her right there. Poor lady. She must've been about 22 years old. Mrs Murray was my 6th grade teacher.

I also remember Griff's band playing at a 9th grade dance. With his trumpet they played lots of Chicago. What good was a jr Hi dance without "Color My World" to slow dance to?

You think it's funny I'm a minister? Every time I see my name on the sign in front of the church I say "Who's that?" I'll put a picture of that sign on my profile so we can all have a good laugh.

Also, for those of you Riversides-Oak Grove.....were any of you part of the " speed reading" group at Oak Grove Elementary? I wonder back if that was some sort of Gov't experiment too! I was there for the first year Oak Grove Elem. opened, second grade. ( ms kings class?) They put me in group where text was flashed on the screen in front of us ( in the library) and then we were tested on retention & comprehension.....scary some of those things they did then just to see if it worked!? Maybe they just sent those of us that lived on the west side of Nicollet for that year? ODD. Mark...thanks for listing those other names, my brain cells are firing off memories that I didnt even know were back in those cob webs!

Mark---or Kirk, Do you remember... did Kelly Sweet tansfer to JFK for a while, and then back to Jefferson? Why am I thinking she was at Kennedy part time? And Primrose, was he always at Kennedy, or did he transfer from Jefferson in the Jr/SR year? I remember Connie Nelson was at Kennedy, but wasnt she suppose to be at Jefferson too, and then transferred?

And Alan Puls (?) was he a fomer Riverside 'resident' that was in our class all the way up to graduation? I saw him in the yearbook, and wondered if that was the same Blonde Alan from all those years ago?

08/13/08 12:04 PM #140

Mark Chapman

I think you are right about Kelly, Connie and John. I think Scott Cotey also transferred from Jefferson because of the great Mr. B and the Kennedy choir. I don't recall Al Puls at Riverside but it could be.

And I am pretty sure that LaMont Cranston actually did play the teen center.

08/13/08 12:19 PM #141

Thomas L. Pederson

I don't think Al Puls would've been at Riverside. He lived in my neighborhood, and I believe he went to Valley View. He definitely went to Portland for Jr High.

OK Kirk I got a teachers name for ya from Riverside. Ms Murrey 6th grade, Thanks Mark. And Hi to you & Kathy too! Shelly your story about Ralph was pretty funny. To think even the girls were ascared of him LOL. I remember I was a crossing guard down at 102nd & Nicollet. And Ralph would come chuggin' by, pullin' on a heater & never even break stride. Not once waiting for us to put the flags out & we were to intimadated to tell on him. Trent Tremer(sp) I played football & baseball with him. Kirk you too right. Jim Quinn how did he die? Anybody know? Jim Stairs is in a band now it's called "Grezzie Mud" I think that's right. Shelly you metioned a blond Allen. There was Allen Hoffman but he didn't graduate with us. And how about Jon Tracy. Other then the memory of him reaching into my deck & me stamming my deck top down on his arm in 5th or 6th. Was he around after Riverside? Any body remember Penny Carlson. Her family had move up to Wadena. I had heard years ago that she had died in a freak accident. Hate to end on a bad note so I won't. Thanks to Craig, for all that you've done to set all these reunions into motion! This one should really be fun! I hope someone rented the party suite?

Michelle Franz (Lisser)

Thats right, Huffman! I remember Penny Carlson, that is sad to hear that she died. Thanks for clearing some of those old cob webs. One of these days when I get the time, I want to pull out the old memory trunk. I have all my years of class pictures, as well as the old yearbooks all the way back. I think I even kept old copies of The Torch.

Funny story too, Soro and I bought our first houses which ended up being next to each other! I was right off Portland Av, and he was on the road perpendicular to my property, his back yard was at my side yard. Funny, how those things happen! At least we were able to clear up when he stood me up for the Sadie Hawkins dance back at Oak Grove and then asked me to marry him at the dance...memories...lot of laughter!

Mr. Kramer, He was a really awesome music teacher! Well right up to the point were he gave me the Tuba! Not the snare drum or the trumpet the Tuba. Between that & getting a Eukalaly for Christmas. My music career was over before it started!
