Maybe I have my music teachers mixed up. Mr Kramer he was at Oak Grove? Who was the male choir/band teacher at Riverside?? Now it's all coming back to me Mr. Kramer/choir/7th grade. It's kinda tough seaching threw the fog that was high school!

Mark Chapman

Mr Kramer was actually at Riverside for a year and then he moved up to OG. He was an inspiration and was a reason I stuck out choir my entire school career. That, and we got to wear cool shirts in the OG Singers.

Bret & John -I'm about 6 days behind reading these posts - but I vividly remember the "Build Up" for about 2 pages of the "Bully" shout out - I think that I might have even wet myself from laughing so hard!

Does everybody from Portland remember Mr. Regenfus? Remember when he'd turn the lights out for a "film-strip" and then run (or was that more of a bound) to the back of the room and jump up and sit on the counter? Man he was a weird duck - great science teacher though?

If anyone's interested a bunch of people are meeting this Friday night at Major's restaurant in Bloomington. Maybe a pre-reunion of sorts for those that cannot make it (I don't want to mention any names [Wade, Pete, Mike, Todd, Tom])! I believe that Sue Ellen Peterson is handing out kisses!!!!!!

Okay, I'm all caught up now. I was at the Beach Boys/Boz Scaggs/Tower of Power - I went about $50 bucks in the hole the next day buying up Boz Scaggs and Tower of Power - still a huge fan! God love a horn section!

Speaking of concerts, I believe I ran into Mr. Bjerke at the Santana/Marshal Tucker Band concert at Midway Stadium back in the day - I believe that Pat (Boom, Boom, Out Go the Lights) Travers opened - talk about a weird combination!

I can't wait to see you all of you at the reunion (well, of course, with the exception of the previously listed gentlemen (Wade, Pete, Mike, Tom, Todd] who have other plans that weekend!)

I stand corrected Allen Huffman (not Hoffman) did graduate with us. Thank you Julie

Hey Betty, I remember Mr. Regenfus at Portland. He was a good science teacher, we just didn't know it at the time. I remember Brian Root harassing him so much that Regenfus almost lost it. I remember a lot of yelling coming from him aimed at Root. Anybody else recall those events?

Julie M. Boeser (O'Hara)

Marilyn -- I have the Best of Bread blasting from my GT when I take it out of the garage (normally only on Sundays).

Kim - I remember that...Brian seemed to be a trouble magnet!

Valley View pool....man what a lot of memories there and at the skating rink!

08/13/08 04:15 PM #152

Sue Ellen M. Peterson (Polson)

Valley View pool...with our season patches sewn on our swimsuits!

Marilyn, Highlander Drill Team marching around the neighborhoods for hours and hours. Marching in the Aquatennial parade and having to take salt tablets before so we wouldn't faint. God!

By the way, I won't be giving out kisses I may regress back to 9th grade and start kicking guys again!! Come on Pete!!

Hey Marilyn, I also remember those Mods at Portland. Those were some of the strangest classes offered: Airplane Model Making; How to Operate a Slide Ruler (not too useful today!); Aeronautics; etc.

Michelle Franz (Lisser)

Marilyn, I kind of forgot about Cathy Casey, what a nice girl she was too! I saw she updated her profile.
Do you remember Linda Hecht? She moved into the 10th grade year. I think she was a Cedar Crest person too? They moved to Winona, MN. I kept in touch with her for a while, and then she ended up getting married young, to a banker in town, i think. She and I were good friends in 9th grade, but I also know she was good friends for years with Mickey...which I think is Michele Johnson? I dont quite remember.....I tried to get in touch with Jen Lerud for years, even when I lived in Newark and NY, but never connected up....I was hoping Deb Van. would have heard from her. I havnt connected with Deb for over a year either though. Betty- I would love to be a fly on the wall when Sue dishes out the kisses to the missing men....Have a great time at the reunion you guys, I wish I could have made it....but thanks for all these posts..they have me chuckling! And Mark, who else was a OG singer with us. I remember the Rassmussens...but there my mind draws a blank!

Kim - As I recall Mr. Regenfuss had a metal plate in his forehead and whenever he got riled up his face would go red everywhere but in the center of his forehead. Crazy stuff we remember.

Aaahhh the Valley View pool - I can't believe that they took out the platform diving board. Remember having contests to see how far under water you could swim holding your breath? Yeah, smoking sure killed that!

Okay all you Portlanders - POP QUIZ - what comes to mind when you think of the art teacher, Mr. Razee?

08/13/08 04:46 PM #156

Thomas L. Pederson

I always thought his name was Mr Ray Z (like a rapper)...

Wasn't Bernie Ragenfus the one that wore the huge ring, and would rake it across students heads when they misbehaved?

Michelle Franz (Lisser)

Mark, Kirk, and Steve

Do you remember Mauro Paiva Neto...the exchange student from Maiceo, Brazil? He lived with Peggy Huot, boy did a lot of us think he was cute! Maybe he just had that foreign flair at that time!

And Gayle Gilliam, she was pretty popular, she went off to Jefferson, didnt she?

Betty M. Pate (Jorgenson)

Tom (I'm sorry, you will always be Tommy) don't you remember him as "Mr. Pick, lick and flick"? I'm trying to get a visual of him as a rapper - nope, not workin'!

08/13/08 05:29 PM #159

Steve Town

Shelly I'm suprized you didn't list Mauro Paiva Neto's arrival & departure dates! Maiceo, Bazil huh. Wow it's hard to tell you even noticed the guy. The lady's do seem to be drawn to the foreigners. I'm sure if they would have sent up a Brazilian women she would not have gone un noticed. But I think every guy in are class would agree that the Class of 78 was chaulked full of Beautiful women! Both inside & out. Who needs foreigners?

How about this for all you Portlanders: Ms. Flom? You gotta admit it, she was a good geography teacher and she really cared that we learned the stuff.

Tom, I also vaguely recall Regenfus had a huge ring and he'd use it.

08/13/08 05:41 PM #161

Betty M. Pate (Jorgenson)

To this day whenever I hear Sri Lanka, I think of Ms. Flom. Plus, can we forget her "bronchitis"? I work with a woman who is 14 years younger than me and she even remembers Ms. Flom!

Best doggone geography teacher there ever was!

Betty
Were you close friends with Steve Sipe back in the portland days? I know he was friends with Mansour & Daryll Smith? I will have to thank him for getting me hooked on Journey, Kansas, and even Styxx back then. I still love those bands, they just had a Journey / Heart concert here, I would have loved to take the whole family to that. Of course after graduation I kind of went on a Stevie nicks thing for years, and switched to Jazz for a few more when I lived in the NYC areas. But, didnt stray far from Journey / Kansas / Styxx....they are all time greats! Steve's mom just passed away recently, she was a great lady! I had the opportunity to see her on a whim, as I was heading to the airport from my grandpa's funeral last December, there in MSP. Last I saw, his dad wasnt doing really well either.

Oh by the way, regarding Portland teachers using objects as punishment, how many of you Portland band members remember Mr. Krob? I clearly recall him deliberately throwing the baton at kids who played the wrong note. He would get really pissed! He's the reason why I quit band!

08/13/08 06:02 PM #164

Todd A. Dressen

Yes Gayle Gilliam did go to Jefferson. As for the Gym teacher it was Mr. Feig. He was a real pervert, I remember that he knocked up a 3 grade teacher, it was hush hush back then and then they ended up getting married. Remember Saturday Phy Ed. and skating at Riverside rink? I remember freezing my butt of walking home after skating all night and having red and white spots on my legs and they iched like crazy!!! This is so much fun my kids said that if I had a face book that I would be a stalker!!!! It is great to here from everyone good times and great laughs!! Boy its really fun to here from the Riverside people that brings you back. The best Teacher ever was Mrs Murray. I think she died of Breast cancer when we were in 8th grade. Kept in touch with her all through 7th met her for lunch with Kathy Harris at Southdale a few times. What a loss she was the best. This is from Tracy Bruley (Dressen) for some reason I can't get in on my own account.

Judy D. Brevig (Haus)

This forum is making my sides hurt.

I absolutely remember Mr. Krob, Kim. Definitely the reason I quit band. Well... that and the fact that every time someone challenged me, I lost my chair. Not to name any names, but Bret Corbin comes to mind.

VFW 1296 Highlanders - A friend of my parents ran that group for years. I can still hear Ha-lip Ho Hep Ha Hut...Hut.

Marilyn -- "Mods" at Portland is really pulling at the memory. I believe that is when I learned to use Click-Clacks. Sold as a toy, but would now be considered a weapon in our "zero tolerance" schools!

Betty Pate-- You bright, beautiful, hot slice of woman. "Plan B" here.
You guys are forgetting Regenfus calling the troublemakers his "Little Beasties"....As in "That's it, you little beastie, get out to the hall!!" Believe me, I know. I was the the new kid in ninth grade who by chance got seated in proximity of Hindrich, Bergien, and Sipe. Can you imagine? No sooner would the lights go down for a movie and the geology rocks would start flying! I remember Aardahl and Kuznia in one corner of the room and our group in the other.... Those poor guys. Regenfus would stand by the lights ready to flash and catch little beasties in the act. Of course that wasn't too tough when rocks would be rattlin'off the metal venetian blinds covering the media center. And yes, he had a college class ring the size of Rhode Island which he loved to backhand people on the head......I got busted with a lap full of rocks one time and felt the wrath. Good for him, I deserved it. He sent me and Dan to the hall and eventually the office. Of course they knew Dan on a first name basis, and probably his home phone, parents names, birth date, favorite foods... you get the picture. But me? Little 92 pounds of strapping altar boy me? They were stunned. How could an angel be involved in such activities? It was my Mom and Dad's initiation to public school.

Two more Teen Center bands deep off the hard drive.
Cain, and I think, The Flaming O's
yes?
Who came up with Rockin' Horse? That was impressive.

Lori A. Tuchscherer (Broadhead)

This has really been a blast. Certainly making me more and more sad I will not be at the reunion. And also making me wonder how many more brain cells I must have fried than the rest of you - pulling names from 30-35 years ago out of thin air!

Judy - I remember the Click-Clacks - and all the bruised arms everyone had trying to work the damn things.

Lori A. Tuchscherer (Broadhead)

And, I still have a night stand I made in Woodshop at Portland - it's actually in one of my kids' rooms. I remember "Home-Ec" but now they call it "Food Science" at our high school. Even the names of classes are going PC! My, how times have changed!
