Fortunately we are all different because if we weren't, there would be a need for only one of us . . .

Kathy Harkreader Jones,
Sandra Reneau and Clint-Michael (her son, my nephew) went to the Local last night and heard Charla Harkreader's daughter. They both agreed she is VERY talented and they really enjoyed her performance. I painted fascia boards yesterday and was comatose about dark so . . . I missed that and a whole lot more.

One more non-obligated but feel compelled-to-do Things about Me

3. My husband Geoff and I quit smoking in 1976 after Doris McGown's first wedding. It may have had something to do with me dancing with Jack as we waited for food at midnight in our orange VW in the drive-through lane. Cannot remember how many girls were in the VW with Geoff. FYI - During Spring semester of our Senior Year, Carrol R taught me how to smoke. She provided me with some kind of slim, and I hope not menthol, cigarette. Sometimes, we were in my car and sometimes in hers. I seem to recall hearing the waves as we smoked - at Surfside, perhaps? In order to get me to inhale, Carroll plied me with liquor. Have absolute no clue how either of us got to our respective homes after each of my lessons. Don't drink either.

Obviously at this rate, I may not be finished before Labor day.

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Lucinda, are you CERTAIN it was me? I don't doubt the smoking part - Janet Skaggs was my smoking buddy in high school - maybe junior high and I'm not sure which one is to blame. Janet liked those dainty little cigars. We would drive around with everybody in the car smoking like we were on fire with all the windows rolled all the way down - in the winter, in the rain, whatever - so the parents couldn't smell anything(it was their cars after all) - yeah, that worked I'm sure. I quit smoking in 1984. I would SWEAR that I did not drink alcohol in high school until the senior prom. I had a big brother - he would have killed me dead. The summer we graduated I began my hardy partying but 'til then . . . as a college freshman I MADE myself learn to drink beer because it was more accessible and cheaper.

OH, AND THIS IS A "25 RANDOM THINGS ABOUT ME" NOT SNITCHING ABOUT THE DEPRAVED BEHAVIOR OF OTHERS! ;-)

You adapted quite well in college. Overachiever.

Winona Hebert Spinks lost her grandfather last weekend but what a legacy he left the family. Winona, your family is in our hearts and prayers.

Hervon Thomas Zirlott

Hervon Thomas Zirlott was born on November 22, 1909, in Biloxi, Mississippi, and passed into rest on March 21, 2009, at his home in Freeport, Texas.

He was the first child of Nathaniel and Nellie Thompson Zirlott and was loved by his brothers, Walter, Joseph “Joe” and Ebbie Zirlott; and sisters, Clora (Leroy) Ryan, Essie (John) Neilson, who went before him. His precious sister, Alice (Bill) Clark of Mobile, Alabama, is left to grieve his passing.

Hervon and his wife, Leona Harris were married on January 27, 1928, in Biloxi, Mississippi. Leona preceded him in death December 1, 2007. We can only imagine the joyous reunion they are now having in Heaven.

Their sons, Eugene (Jessie) and Thomas (Charlene) Zirlott; and daughters, Alberta (Leroy) Hebert, and Genevieve (Cyril) Wilcox are left to mourn their passing.

Also left to remember their Pawpaw are grandchildren, Pat (David) Hopkins, Winona (John) Spinks, Malcolmn (Tori) Hebert, Chris (Denise) Hebert, Eric Hebert, Buddy (Rhonda) Zirlott, Donna (Bill) Kiley, Lee (Theresa) Wilcox, Thomas (Mary) Zirlott and Lisa (Kin) Westergaard.

Their boundless love and devotion were shared with 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Hervon will be missed by his coffee buddies who meet each morning; especially his devoted cousin, Broel (Genie) Rousseau.

Many fishermen will remember Hervon and Leona for the Pelican Bait House they ran after Hervon’s retirement as a tugboat captain for many years.

The family request that you please send no flowers. Hervon’s great love was for his Lord Jesus Christ and he would want any tribute to be to the Lord’s work. No one was around Hervon very long before he told them of this love, as he encouraged them to find the same joy he knew. You may send tribute to the church of your choice.

Services for Hervon will be at the new Restwood Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 24. Visitation will be on Monday, March 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be next to his beloved wife, Leona.

Honored to bear their Pawpaw’s body are his grandsons, Malcolmn, Chris and Eric Hebert, Buddy Zirlott and Lee Wilcox. His grandson Thomas Zirlott will be represented by Hervon’s great-grandson.

The family feels blessed to have had this amazing person for 99-plus years. God blessed him with good health and a sharp mind to the end of his Earthly journey. Thank you Dad - Pawpaw for your love and your life example for us to follow.

Restwood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 1038 W. Plantation Drive, Lake Jackson, TX 77566, (979) 297-2121. A Dignity Memorial Provider.

Numbers 4, 5, and 6 Things about Me

4. I work for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. I am the Region 6's Head of the Air Counseling Practice Group. This means that if you live in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, or New Mexico, your air is cleaner since 1980 when I began working at EPA as a staff attorney. I love my work even though I work full-time from home. Although I am eligible to retire, I think I will be working until I die or the feds kick me out. This work suits me to a T. Who would have ever thought I would find something this wonderful to do every day?

5. I work full-time for EPA but from home. EPA allowed me to start working from home in 1991. I do not believe that anybody else ever would have done this for an employee at that time. Nobody was thinking about telecommuting back then. So I would have lost my job except that I was working for a progressive federal agency.

6. I work from home for a variety of health reasons: I have MS. I have asthma. I survived uterine cancer. I survived ovarian cancer. I survived aggressive breast cancer. All this took a lot out of me so I have very little energy but I have sufficient energy to put on my work sweats, sit down at the computer with the phone nearby, and start work every day, and work for 9 hours. The mind keeps ticking!

03/24/09 04:37 PM #221

Michael Poehl

Lucinda -

Thanks for your efforts at making our air cleaner for all of us - and we are going to start calling you Super Survivor.....and you have as much energy as the rest of us. If I work for 9 hours ( can't remember doing this for quite some time ) then I need a nap.

03/24/09 07:18 PM #222

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

WOW, Lucinda makes the Energizer Bunny look like a slacker! (and I feel like a whiner) AND,EPA's status just went up - obviously they recognized Lucinda's worth!

Yes, Mr. Strickland, I had a natural talent. However, you must be disappointed there was no magna cum laude recognition for alcohol consumption.

FREDDY AND DEBBIE LOYD BRENK

Charles Otto Loyd Jr.

“The memory of a good person is a blessing” Proverbs 10:7.

Born on May 19, 1925, in Pottsville, Texas, Charles Loyd was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 23, 2009, at Woodlake Nursing Home.

Charles was born to Charles Otto Loyd Sr. and Marion Ida Loyd. He was loved by his sisters, Willodean Kemp and Betty Merle Wright.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ida Loyd and his sister, Dean Kemp and a newborn brother.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty; daughter, Debbie Brenk and husband, Freddie; granddaughters, Brandye Roland and husband, Chris, and Holly Brockman and his cherished great-grandkids, Kaylee and Karsyn Roland and Jacey Brockman. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Wright and special “adopted” daughter, Carol Sue Herbert, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Charles was very proud of the education he received and the special friends he made while attending school in Pottsville. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served as Medal smith Second Class and was assigned to USN CTC Camp Peary Virginia 133rd Naval Const. Battalion. He was active in this position during World War II and was proud to have been a witness to the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima. He was discharged from duty in 1946. At this time, he met and married the love of his life, Betty Tilley.

Together with their daughter, they moved to Freeport in 1952. He worked at Dow as a boilermaker beginning in 1950 and was a member of Boilermakers Local 682. In 1970, he worked with his wife to open their business, Loyd’s Florist of Brazosport. It was through this business that they met many wonderful friends. Many of these friends are still loyal customers today. In 1982, he retired from Dow and became a full-time delivery driver for the flower shop. During this time, he helped raise his granddaughters at the flower shop. Beginning in 1998, he was promoted to his most cherished position, that of full-time playmate to his great-grandchildren at the flower shop. The highlights of these years include pulling Kaylee around the shop in her little wagon, playing horses with Jacey and cheering Karsyn on as her cart wheeled through the shop. He also will be remembered for singing to all of his great-grandchildren.

During his long lifetime, Charles enjoyed many hobbies. These hobbies include raising horses and cattle, airplane pilot, scuba diver, Amateur Radio Operator, M.A.R.S. Network where he was honored to relay messages from active servicemen to their families. He also helped with communications during hurricanes for the city of Freeport, enjoyed photography and videography where he recorded historical tapes to preserve the history of Freeport. He was involved in numerous civic projects and committees to better the City of Freeport. Some of his fondest memories were working with Holly to raise show cows for the Brazoria County Fair. He was also an avid gardener and raised many successful gardens on his “Ponderosa”.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2009, at Velasco Baptist Church with Pastor Chris Moore officiating.

Burial will follow at Gulf Prairie Cemetery in Jones Creek.

Pallbearers will be Freddie Brenk, Chris Roland, Rodney Wright, Charles Kemp, Sonny Tilley, Marty Gibson, Richard and Robert Turner.

Honorary pallbearers will be Waymon Womack, Johnny Womack, Leroy Jurries, Luther Boyd and Eric Dinsmore.

The family would like to extend our warmest thanks to the staff of Woodlake Nursing Home for all the special love and care given to our “Papaw”.

Just as our Papaw always taught us, we will “always remember who we are: Charlie Loyd’s family.” We love you, Papaw!

Tony Barnard

OK Carrol, I’m way behind on reading all the lists, but here you go.
1. I was born in Freeport at the Dow hospital. (Yes, I know. Most of you were, too.) The first Monday after high school graduation, I was working at Dow’s Plant B. After college, my first career job was with Dow. I met my future wife, Cheryl Smith, at Dow. Sometime later it occurred to me that perhaps I should get the Dow Diamond tattooed on my butt.
2. Cheryl and I were blessed with two daughters. Kelley was born in Houston in 1977. Unfortunately, we lost our second daughter, Brittany, to a very rare genetic disorder when she was only 27 days old. She died at Texas Children’s Hospital seven days after being admitted for staff and strep infections. Fortunately, she didn’t suffer, and for that we were grateful.
3. We’ve been married 33 years now, so perhaps it will work out. I did learn early that an important key to a happy marriage is to remember to put the toilet seat down.
4. I was a partner in a short-lived photography business in Houston with my best friend, Mike Sloan. (Mike is one of Candy’s favorite co-workers.) Mike and I took a series of black and white 35mm slides (of a WWII Naval vessel in Galveston) which are in the archives of the Smithsonian. Not all that big of a deal, but you really do have to be quite old to have your photos “archived”.
5. I never was one to contribute a great deal toward community service, but Cheryl was and she still does. She was very active in Girl Scouts while Kelley was growing up. For a number of years, she and I taught photography workshops for Girl Scouts at Camp Pryor near Wharton. The girls had to use Tri-X black and white film, develop it, make contact prints, and then make enlargements. This was before digital cameras became popular. Hey, don’t laugh. I hear vinyl albums are making a comeback. Let’s see; where did I store that turntable?
6. I was raised Methodist, but converted to Catholicism, which means I can drink, swear, smoke, and raise hell (all in moderation, of course).
7. I love life and realize the good, the bad, and the in-between are all for a purpose. There is a young man in our church whose dad died of a heart attack a couple of years ago. Carl took his dad’s passing very hard. Carl is also mentally challenged. He can’t drive, so I frequently take him to Shipley’s or McDonald’s for breakfast, and to church. We just enjoy spending time together.
8. Thanks to Sam, after one of our deer hunting trips where he asked me to help him pick up a 400 lb deer that he had shot, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. That means I have to limit my caffeine and (damn it) alcohol consumption, take Fosomax weekly, and walk 3 miles every day. A very helpful doctor in Lake Jackson recommended spinal surgery. Thankfully, I decided to get a second opinion from a spine surgeon in the Texas Medical Center who told me flat out that I did not need any surgery.
9. I love to RV with Cheryl, mostly in Texas and Louisiana state parks. Our favorite parks are Pedernales Falls, Tyler, Goose Island, Lost Maples, and North Toledo Bend. One of our favorite things to do is buy deer corn and feed the deer that come around our campsite. Wait! I forgot that’s illegal.
10. Our wonderful daughter Kelley is fast determining what she wants to do with her life. It was a challenge, but she crammed 6 years of higher education into 11, and in doing so earned her B.S. and M.A. degrees. She has begun her advanced teacher certification training and should be teaching (music she hopes) full time in BISD this fall.
11. My nephew, Mark, has 10 children. (Goody for him.) I like to take them all out to dinner once in a while, right after I go to the bank for a loan.
12. A lot of the guys remember that In Frank Cain’s drafting class most of us were constantly giving the poor man hell. We would imitate his voice; throw papers around the room, and all the other usual stuff. (some not so usual) We all figured an introductory drafting class had to be easy. The first exam came around and a lot of us just copied answers. The tests looked exactly the same from a distance, but Frank pulled a fast one and made almost all the tests different. I think the average grade for that exam was about a 12.
13. The classmates I stay in contact with the most are Sam Sutherland, Steve Porter, Candy Sullivan, and Bill Massengale. Sam, Steve, Bill and I were all awarded our Eagle Scout badges when members of Troop 345 in Freeport. I’m not sure if Candy received her Eagle Scout rank, but I guess it’s possible.
14. My “favorite” high school memory was when Cheryl Lewellen and I played the roles of Emily and George in the drama department’s production of “Our Town”. There was one scene in the play where Cheryl and I kissed, and Mr. Rhymes instructed us to “hold the kiss” until the stage manager completed his lines (which, thankfully, took some time). I immediately decided to pursue a career in theater.
15. I’ve never been on an Emmaus walk. However, I once walked with Peggy Emanis. : )
16. I had a great time in high school, but also at Brazosport College. My best friend at BC was Mike Sealy. During those two years we threw some good parties at my parent’s cabin at Quintana beach. Some of you remember those parties. (and some of us don’t)
17. My best years at Dow were at polycarbonate. My co-workers and I would go to Arkansas or Oklahoma for a week almost every summer to canoe some of those great rivers. Miss those days.
18. I really enjoy rifle and pistol shooting. Did I read about someone swearing that she would never wear a girdle again, even at gunpoint? Hmmm.
19. I’m interested in who people choose to be their mentors. In addition to my parents and my brother, I’ve found myself following the words and examples of four teachers. They are: Jesus, Wayne W. Dyer (popular author and lecturer in the field of spirituality and human development), John C. Bogle (author on mutual fund investing and founder of the Vanguard group) and Brian Tracy (the best expert in sales training that I have ever heard). Who are your mentors? Oh, I almost forgot Dee Allen (creative writer and chef).
20. I love most styles of music but mainly rock, classical, and instrumental. My favorite musicians are Eric Johnson (on electric guitar; but as Sutherland reminded me, just so long as he doesn’t sing), Nigel Kennedy (classical violinist), and Bruce Hornsby.
21. My favorite actors are Clint Eastwood, Meg Ryan (yes, yes, chick flicks), Tom Cruise, and Cheryl Lewellen.
22. In 2007, I never thought I would ever have that much money.
23. In 2008, I never thought I would ever lose that much money.
24. Yes, I did have Lasik surgery. Do I recommend it? Absolutely! No pain whatsoever. Get it!!! Even if you don’t need it. Really, having your corneas surgically altered is just a delightful experience. OK seriously, my improved vision only lasted about 8 years and then my eyesight started getting worse, so be aware that it may not last.
25. Last but not least. Sorry Cheryl and Carrol, but Candy said she was tired of me picking only on her.
I tag Steve Porter, Janice Mangum, Bill Massengale, and Steve Landers (if he’ll ever submit his profile).

03/28/09 07:37 AM #232

Carrol Reneau (Jeffers)

Well done, Tony, and definitely worth the wait. #s 22 and 23 - my sentiments EXACTLY! One time I was picking up attendance rosters and somebody in Mr. Cain's class was snickering and pointing at the folder. I opened it and there was a page from Playboy tucked inside. I honestly can't remember if I turned it in like that or not . . . but, remembering high school I'm pretty sure that I didn't have the grace to take it out. There should have been a video monitor in that class.
You got it, the secret to a happy marriage is sooooo simple - please share it with the rest of the male population. Write a book, go on Oprah and Larry King - get that 401(K) solid again.

Both Steves (Porter & Landers) haven't joined up, so if you have their e-mails, nag directly.

My sympathy to you and Cheryl on the loss of your daughter - the greatest pain on earth.

Lucinda,
I feel much better about the environment, now that I know you are w/ the EPA. I hope you continue to love your job b/c we need you there.

Tony,
Just wondering how much you paid Mr. Rhymes to instruct you to hold that kiss....

Kathy,
I don't remember who played the part of the stage manager, but I did offer bribes for him to screw up his lines and speak a lot more slowly.

Bill,
Did you say you have or are a pain in the neck? Only Kate knows for sure.

03/28/09 03:24 PM #236

Carrol,
I've contacted both Porter and Landers and will keep after them until they join up. I can't think of a parent losing a child without thinking of Mrs. Sealy. She has lost three sons now. Roger, then Mike, then Randy. I don't know if I could handle it.
