John S. (Spike) Caldwell III
May 29, 1951 – August 29, 2025
Spike Caldwell, 74, passed away on Friday, August 29th, at home in Freeport. Son of Dr. John S. Caldwell Jr. and Mary Hodges Caldwell, he was born in Brazoria, May 29, 1951. The family moved to Lake Jackson, then to Freeport in 1957. Spike graduated from Brazosport High School in 1969.
For more than 50 years, Spike served the community as a fireman and EMS with the Freeport Fire Department. For even longer, he was a fanatical baseball fan, particularly of his beloved Houston Astros. On the day of the first major league game in Houston, Dr. Caldwell took his three children, Sally, Sim, and Richard to the game at Colt 45 Stadium, and a photographer took their picture for the front page of the Houston Chronicle. Spike was also an avid hunter.
Spike was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. John and Mary; and his brother, Richard, also of Freeport, in 2017.
He is survived by his sister, Sally Caldwell, currently a resident of New Hampshire.
The family would like to express its gratitude to the Freeport Fire Department and Police Department, and to Joe and Cindy Domingues for their many kindnesses to both Spike and Richard in their last days. Mil Gracias.

Spike was always a good friend. I am sorry to hear about his passing.
I went to Lamar University. If you remember our head trainer at BHS was Paul Zeke. He left BHS and became the head trainer at Lamar University. One day I was at McDonald Gym at Lamar for a PE class and in walked Mr Zeke shaking his head. I asked him.... "what's wrong Mr Zeke. He looked at me and said...... I am trying to teach 3 students how to be a trainer", and then he stated "I wish I had Spike here with me!"
