In Memory

Doris McGown** (Angleton)

Doris McGown Beck Angleton (April 11, 1951 – April 16, 1997) was a Texas socialite and a murder victim. Going to her River Oaks home to get something for her twins, who were playing a sports event that day, Doris was surprised when a gunman repeatedly shot her.

Doris was born to Randy McGown, a Dow Chemical engineer, and his wife Ann McGown Borochoff. She grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas, and had one younger brother, Steven. McGown graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in speech pathology. After graduation, she began a career as a schoolteacher, and later became a sales representative for a pharmaceutical firm. She married Robert Angleton in 1982 and on August 1, 1984 delivered twin daughters, Nicole & Alessandra Angleton.

Doris was always filled with love for friends and family. Any time you saw her she was smiling. Her death is a great loss.

Doris was the best sister anyone could ever have had, I miss her and I know her friends do too. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, except maybe me.. ha! She would include me with Connie, Laura and Candy when they all went to the beach at Surfside, that meant a lot. Once, she even included me on a date with Tra G, they were going to a movie that she knew I wanted to see. She just said I couldn't sit with them! Tra was very generous and they took me to the Lake Theater and I got to see my movie, I never knew where they sat, I just made myself invisible in the crowd. I don't even remember the movie, but I remember the gesture they both made, how many other "little brothers" can say the same? Tra was the best. She taught me to dance. I still have the 45 record she wrote on, it says "Doris and Davy". It was the Righteous Brothers "Your my Soul and Inspiration". I can't listen to that song without thinking of her and that time in my life. What a time we lived in...
I look forward to seeing her friends at the reunion. My mother will be with me and she remembers everyone too! Who remembers the Surrey with the red fringe on top in our front yard? That was a party, I still have the salt and pepper shakers, they were in the shape of feed sacks. See everyone there!

Steven, we are so glad you and your mom will be with us. Doris was a vivacious, fun and kind person. She was popular, smart, and loved by us all. She will be missed at our 40th.

This is a very late comment. I rarely look on this site. But I just wanted to post a comment for Doris' family if they ever look-- to tell them how sorry I am for their loss.- I lived down the street from Doris as a child-- on Cypress. We played together, went to school together, and attended the same birthday parties. Her mother gave the most wonderful parties. And Doris and I had the most wonderful times dressing up and putting on plays in her garage. She was the sweetest playmate. When I heard, years ago, what happened to her -- I just cried for that beautiful little girl I played with, for that beautiful woman and mother she had become, and for the mother, daughter and sister that was taken away from her family. I want her family to know that I have not forgotten her.. And I send them my love. Teresa

Thanks for the comments Teresa. My mom will appreciate them too. I remember you too. We had a great neighborhood full of kids. Where have those days gone. I wonder at times.

Steven.
