In Memory

Steve Williams**

Steve Ames Williams was born on January 14, 1951, and died In August of 1970, Steve and his brother, Ben were on their way to San Antonio to hunt. They were driving down I-10 when a crazed gunman was randomly shooting at cars. Ben was wounded, but Steve was shot in the neck and died instantly. His funeral was in his mother's home town of Navasota, Texas. He was a nominee for Most Handsome our Senior year at Brazosport. Steve was active in FAA, and his most cherished activity was playing as a Tight End for the Exporters.

Steve was my best friend back in High School and our 1 year at Sam Houston we roomed together.Steve and I wore the same size jeans, boots, shirts and hats. The night we graduated from Brazosport we left for Monroe La. to work for his Grandfathers Pipeline Co. for some summer money. We worked 7-12's all summer but thought we were rich by August. If Steve had not been killed we would have probably been in the Pipeline business these days. Not a lot of people knew but Steve never drank any alcohol his Dad was an alcoholic Steve was our designated driver before the word existed.I used to kid Steve could I have his extra's "girls" they were always attracted to him.Steve was a great outdoorsman hunter and fisherman he was very smart and a sharp dresser. He would do anything he could to help anyone. He was going to join the Marine Corp with me and Joey Cresswell but he wanted to go hunting before he went into Boot Camp and thats when he was shot and killed on the road to their hunting lease. There is no telling what he would have accomplished it seems some of our better ones were taken so young.I still miss and think of Steve we met in 9th grade and just bonded. Of coarse we had great dreams of building pipelines all over the world his grandfather helped build the Alaskan Pipeline and told us amazing stories of how hard it was and how they had to deal with the cold weather.I wish he were here now so he could be involved with the reunion he would have loved it.I'm sure he's smiling down on us. In honor of Steve I named my son after him and he is a lot like Steve good looking, great dad and family man and great outdoorsman hunting and fishing and is a very good golfer.Dexter Widner

I miss Steve too. Steve was my boyfriend all through high school and my first year of college. He was an honorable person. Steve was a sharp dresser, and was a very kind and considerate young man. He was a devoted and faithful friend to those who were his friends. Steve and I talked and still dated a year after I had left for Houston Baptist University. But while at school, I met Eddie Smith, and immediately I knew that Eddie was the man I was to marry. We are still married 47 years later.

Steve was disappointed that I wasn't going to marry him, and I am sorry that he was upset I didn't feel he was the one I was to marry. I was shocked and so sad when I heard the news about Steve's death. I agree with you Dexter, I believe Steve would have been one of the wealthiest among us. He was that determined and focused. We will miss you forever Steve.

Keith and Steve were good friends. I remember getting the news and trying to figure how I would tell Keith when he got home from work. It was so tragic and senseless. He took it very hard, as I expected. Friends never get over something like that. Steve was so handsome and just a great guy. Everyone that knew him had to like him.

Steve was one of the guys from Clute that I ran around with. Gee, I knew Steve right after they moved to Clute. Several times he stayed over at my house and I also stayed at his. We would go to Matagorda and go duck hunting. Man, he loved to hunt!

I was in California when Steve was killed. When I heard the news, I literally sat down and cried. Many, Many times over the years I have asked God----Why?
And I still don't have an answer. But I do know that I still miss him.

Steve,
What can I say. No words can tell of how much you are missed. Our "Clute" days together were fantastic and you were such an awesome person. Katrina Eppes called to tell me when you were killed and I sat and just cried. So so many of us did. I remember your funeral and how hard everybody took your death. Your friendship meant so much to me. You were truly a leader. When Dexter and I were married and had our son we named him after you because you had been such a good friend to me and like a brother to Dexter. As Dexter stated in his comments, our Steve really is a lot like you were. We are divorced now but remain good friends. I am grateful for having known you and the times that we shared. Someday I'll see you again.
