In the midst of locating classmates for our upcoming 2010 reunion I decided to find Mark even though for some reason he was not listed in the 1969 Mosaic Yearbook. He was very much a part of our Wingate experience and Winthrop J.H.S. too ( See Mark Zekofsky's profile photo of the Wingate baseball team...Zulu was 4th from the left on the bottom row).
I located his wife Julie and she told me that I missed him by about 5 months. He had battled liver cancer and that was the cause of his passing. She broke down crying and told me that she could not get past missing him. They had a very close relationship. They met in Little Italy in Manhattan. Mark worked for the NYC Sanitation Dept. and Julie lived on his route. She had a young son from a previous marriage and they had two more sons during their marriage. His passing left a big void in his family.
Many thanks to Dr. Jay Pruzansky for providing the photo of Zulu in the Middle East circa early 1970's. He is standing next to the horse in this photo. I think that natural wild streak that many of us remember about him has been captured in this picture.
David Castagne recently summed up Mark presisely and accurately when he said: " Zulu was a good looking and fun loving guy...and the girls loved him". Well put.

Mark (Zulu) had an incredible spirit and thirst for adventure when I knew him in high school. He was a loyal friend and together we explored both sides of the atlantic. Our lives took seperate paths yet I treasure the wild days when "free love" flowed and the marijuana was plentiful. I miss those days and I miss you.

I was a very close friend of Mark. We shared the same fire escape on Hawthorne St. We were friends since the early age of 7 years old. I can share many stories from our early childhood days. I will look for some photos and post them on Wingate's site. Zulu, how he got that name is another story, which I told Reuben and will share that also on another comment. The last time we were together was in Davie Florida. He and Julie were visiting Mark's son Michael from his first marriage. Mark, Anthony Scuilla and myself with our wives had drinks and dinner in Fort Lauderdale sometime in the 90's. We also hung out at the Hotel where he was staying with some of the guys from Hawthorne St. that was great.
He will be missed.
RIP old friend.

Since the advent of being able to return to the past via the internet, I have looked for Mark Zulu online many times.  Somehow, this week I had luck and found him on this website for Wingate HIgh School.  Mark was my landlord in Brooklyn on Atlantic and Hoyt in 1977-78.  He had an antique shop on the ground floor.  I still have a beautiful lamp that I bought from him at that time.  This was an impressionable time for me, hailing from N.J., only 19 and living on my own for the first time, and in NYC and Mark is a strong memory for me.  He was a good landlord and I enjoyed knowing that he was just downstairs in his shop through the week.  I hoped I would one day find him and reconnect.
