Steve grew up in the old neighborhood and went to Winthrop. His family moved to Canarsie and so he went to Canarsie High, but he was always back in the old neighborhood, hanging out with old and new friends. Jill Avrack and he shared a birthday and they were like brother and sister. I met Steve through Jill and he became one of my closest friends for decades.
Steve lived in Brooklyn until the wanderlust got him; after spending a year or so going across country, he eventually ended up in Washington state. He never forgot his old friends, and returned for many visits and attended both of my sons' bar mitzvahs.
Steve was survived by his brother Phil, sister Bernice, "brother"/nephew Scott, and their children; and his friend John, and a cat.
Wow! This is shocking to me to find that Steve has passed away. We lived in the same apartment building at 73 East 96th Street. Lost track of him completely when I left Brooklyn immediately after graduation in 1967. Knew the whole family very well - Phil, Bernice, Scott, and even Scott's mother, Lila. In fact, Steve's mother, Tillie, and my mother were friends going back to their old neighborhood in Brownsville. I am so saddened to learn of Steve's passing. If anyone reading this know how to contact the family, I woulde love to hear from them.
I lived in 117 East 96 st. and went to school with Bernice. I don't know what happened to her or anybody else who lived in that building. Lots of kids in there. We all went up the block to P.S. 189. My cousin was Ronnie Brodman who also passed away.
Sadly, Bernice passed away a few years after Steve. His brother Phil is still with us. If anyone wants to get in touch with the family, my friend Margie is still in contact with them.
