I first met Kenny when we were in fourth grade together at South Mebane Elementary. I transferred to Turrentine in sixth grade and didn’t see him again until he transferred to Williams.
He sat near me in English the year he was killed. We were term paper partners. I can remember how strange it was to think that he was with us on Friday and on Monday he was gone. We weren’t close, but Kenny’s death made a significant impression on me.
After his accident, I began wearing my seatbelt. I also began nagging everyone else about wearing theirs too. My husband and son will tell you that, even now, when they leave the house my last words to them are always, “I love you; wear your seatbelt.”
A couple of years after we graduated, I was in a car accident on 87. Both cars were totaled. I walked away with only a couple of bruises. The officer at the scene told me that I was lucky. If I hadn’t been wearing my seatbelt, I would have been killed. I will always be so grateful to Kenny for teaching me that lesson. But, I will also always be so sad to know that I learned that lesson at Kenny’s expense. I still pray for his family.
Wear your seatbelt.

I remember first meeting Kenny at Turrentine. We were in the same math class together. He was very nice and fun to talk to. Sometimes we would hang out in the hallway before school.
I remember talking to him the day before he was killed and how shocked I was when I heard what happened. It was very sad to lose him.
