What are your memories of high school (i.e. secret crush, embarrassing moment, funniest thing you did in high school, favorite high school hang out, favorite teachers)?

I liked the freckles on Jan Hebel. And I also thought Jan Geltner was as cute as a little button!
I can remember teasing Jan Geltner about a AMC Gremlin that I seen her drive once. Jan I think they are cool now.
Sorry Jan H and Jan G if I grossed you out.
It was always embarrassing when one of the Clownsters would call me "Fat Albert".
The funniest thing that ever happened to me actually happened not to be so funny to Randy Harling.
One day in January of 1970 I put a new exhaust system on a big Olds Vista Cruiser wagon in shop class for Wayne Harling, Randys' dad. The plan was to return the car back to the Harling house after class. My shop class was in the first two hours of school. Any way Randy had skipped school that day and I first realized it when I pulled into their drive. Their house was on the corner of the school parking lot. As I was getting out of the car I noticed somebody peeking out of the front window.
Well nobody was supposed to be home, so I went to the front door and knocked as I thought it might be his younger brother Norman.
To my surprise it was Randy. He let me in and ask if Craig Lauer was in school, as Craig was to skip out too and they were to go into Chicago to hang out. Randy had not heard from Craig. Well because it was snowing that morning Craig decided to go to school.
I convinced Randy to drive me back to the auto shop class. He was reluctant to do so as he was still in his jammies. To this day I swear they were the kind with the fuzzy booties in them.
I convinced him just to throw a coat on and we could cruise up and down the parking lot to look for Craig Lauer's car. His job was to look to the left and I was to look to the right. I think it was on the third isle that we came down was the main entrance to the front of the school. A drivers ed car was coming from the right. I assumed that Randy being the driver would also look to the right as we approached the main drive. He did the last two times.
Well you guessed it we T-Boned the Driver Ed car. I think it was a brand new Plymouth Fury III.
I think Purvass (spelling I'm sure is wrong ) was the driver ed teacher that day. Well I made a be-line back to shop and Randy spent a good part of the day in the deans office in his favorite PJs.
Some of you may remember that the car was set out back by the driver ed simulator bulding on jack stands.I think it was to remind everybody what kind of damage even a slow speed crash could do. And probably to torment Randy Harling.
There was one other thing that was kind of embarrassing to me. As I mentioned before, A lot of the clowns would call me "Fat Albert". Well not too many of you knew that a gal named Tona Evangelista is my niece. She is my older sisters daughter. Well she was expelled from a school in Melrose Park, and came to live with our family to finish out her junior and senior year.
Well one day she came stomping into the study hall and I was sitting with Randy Harling, Craig Lauer, Darryl Yamashita, and many others. Some of us used to call Darryl Yamashita "Hoshy".Or "Hoshy Moto."
So Tona came stomping into the study hall with her high heels, mini skirt, and be-hive dyed blond hair-do right up to the table we were at and said "Uncle Bob some ass-hole gave me another detention and I have to stay over at the Deans office after school." I used to give her a ride home as I drove to school every day.
As Tona turned and stomped back out Darryl jumped up on the bench seat and pointed right at me and started yelling "Uncle Albert. .Uncle Albert".
Well I have to admit that Uncle Albert did not bother me at all compared to Fat Albert. Infact I built three custom Hippy Vans from 1975 thru 1979
and every one had a custom tire cover on the back
door with "Uncle Albert" -"Keep on Vanin". And to this day I use "Uncle Albert" as my CB radio handle in big rig job.

Least favorite memories?

When I was accused of stealing a taillamp from a car in auto shop. I drove a 1961 Impala convertible.
The shop teacher owned a 1961 Belair sedan. My car had a broken tail lamp lenses. His did not. Earl Burns and I did not get along too well, and he was in the same class. He switched the tail lamp lenses and then rat me out, saying I did it. I was ask if I took the lenses, of course I did not so I would not take the rap. Some guy that only had class the first hour, his name may come to me latter, seen Earl do it , but was not there at the time Earl accused me of it . The next day the whole class was punished because I would not take the blame.
We were not allowed to work on any projects and was made to just clean up the shop. The dude that seen him may have been Ken Factly. He was not in school that day. The next day the drill was the same, but Ken was there and he told the teacher who switched out the tail lamp lenses. Earl got some detention time over it.
Latter we got into a fight in the locker room of the shop class over this and both got into trouble for that.

Where else have you lived?

Moved to Alton (southern Il.) in the fall of 1973 for my first over the road driving job. Then moved to Elgin on the west side in 1975.
I moved to my current adress, Kingman, Arizona in March 1986.
I also own property in Ladysmith,Wisconsin. It is just retirement property, I do not live there.

Still have family around ?

Yes

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? Who?

Yes. Just a couple though. I keep in touch with Randy Harling and Craig Lauer. Its kind of tuff to hang out with them though because of he two thousand mile gap between our homes.
When I go back to see my brothers and sisters in St. Louis, Northern Illinois ,and Northern Wisconsin, I try to see Randy and Craig.
Craig and Randy have both been out to visit me on different occasions as well. Kingman, Arizona is south of Las Vegas, NV. about 105 miles. So when Randy has the gambling urge he has been known to stop in. (although sometimes he sneaks in and out of Vegas then tells me latter he was out)

What did you do right after high school?

I went to work full time at Dons Union 76 as a mechanic and tow truck operator.
I worked at Meadowdale Upholstery all trough high school, and also worked part time for them until the fall of 1973.
I worked for Hary Center Senior at the Lake Marion gas station my Junior and senior year when I was not working for Meadowdale Upholstery.
In 1973 I moved to Alton to become a over the road truck driver. Thirty six years latter I'm still at it.

What did you want to do or think you were going to do when you finished high school?

I wanted to go to Denver,Co. to a auto body tech school .
Bill Sanders and Dick Edgington went out,Sanders
became an auto mechanic and I think Edgington became a diesel truck mechanic.

Past jobs?

I worked at an upholstery shop during and after high school.
Worked at Dons Union 76 as light duty mechanic and tow truck opperator.
Then went to work driving a 18 wheeler pulling a 48 foot flatbed hauling mostly steel.Did this for about a year and a half.
Worked in Streamwood Ill. as a local driver in and around Chicago from spring of 1975 till summer of 1977.
August of 1977 I went to work for McLean Trucking Co. I started pulling double LTL freight trailers. My home terminal was in Tinley Park. It was my first Union or Teamsters job. I drove for them from August 18 1977 (they had a min.25 yr. age requirement) until they closed their doors on January 10 1986.
Moved to Kingman ,Az. to work for ABF Freight System. I went on their sonority road board on March 03, 1986.I just had my 24th year anniversary this year.(03/03/2010)
So this year (2010) on August 18 (my birthday) I will have been driving a 18 wheeler for 37 years. (39 years retired 03/06/2012)
33+ years will be as a Union Teamster. All I might proudly add accident free. That is about 4.5 million
(4,500,000 ) miles. Not bragging, it is just the fact.
Officially retired March 2012 from A.B.F Freight System with 26 years on Kingman , Az. Line Driver Board

High points of your life since high school?

Still waiting..

Low point of your life since high school?

Several of them :
I lost a brother in March 1977 in a small air craft crash.
Larry was four years older than I.
Then just a little over a year latter, in June of 1978, I lost a sister from cancer. Dorothy was one year and eight days older than I. She was also a Clownster, she graduated in 1970. Some of you may have known her. We were very close as brother and sister, and my best friend. I still miss her very much.
I was always and still am close to all my siblings , I'm number 10 of 11.
Then of course I lost my Mother in April 1990 and my Father in January 1996.

Any vices?

Yes . CARS. I have spent a fortune on cars.
I currently own a 1956 Chevrolet Nomad that has a modern rod conversion. And a 1982 Corvette.
And I have just started restoring a 1972 Chevrolet
El Camino SS. I'm going to restore this to stock. I
hope to have this done before the 40th re-union. I might even build enough courage to drive it back for the re-union.

UPDATE : 4/07/2021 Still have the SS El Camino still not restored either. It is sitting in my pole barn here in Wisconsin since August 2012.
Lost the 56' Nomad and the Corvette in a 29 year marriage / divorce .

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I am not as shy as I was in school. And all though I weigh less than I did when I graduated I look like any other old fart with almost no hair and my beard is now grey.

Famous or interesting people you've met? (besides Peewee)

I met Judge Joe Brown and his beautiful wife and teenage daughter about ten years ago. They were on vacation and followed my truck into a hole in the wall type hamburger joint. This is in Mojave, Ca. near Fort Edwards Air Base. ( they some times land the Space Shuttle there )
They were standing in line behind me when he said to me he had always heard that truck drivers knew where the good food joints were. ( Not really we stop where it is convenient ) Then he told his wife to order the same thing I order. He gave her a fifty dollar bill and went to the bath room.
I ordered I pastrami burger with a side of French fried zucchini strips. This in my opinion is their best sandwich. The only problem is it will feed two people easily. so when the Judge came back in and seen the huge pile of food on his plate he ask his wife "How in the world am I going to eat all that? " "She said that's your problem, you said order what he ordered so stop complaining."
I was sitting over and down from them when he looked over and said to me after he had a few bites, "Man this here is a damn good san-which" where do you put it all ? I get a doggy back and have half for dinner !

Comments:

I wish I would have been more involved with school.
