Tagged by Ms. Sheila, here goes:
1. I once climbed a very tall hill on Okinawa with some other Marines, then we got ran off by an officer in a helicopter, evidently we were in a tank firing range area and were holding up practice...
2. Went deep-sea fishing and stayed sea-sick the whole time. Only thing that bit my hook was a giant green sea-turtle, which is an endangered species, and the boat captain cut my line.
3. I ran across Emmitt Chitman on Okinawa, one time, and last time I saw him. He is a great person.
4. I was the only family member with my Dad when he passed away, everyone else had just left to get some rest and he just passed away within a few minutes; one of the hardest things I've ever had to experience.
5. One of the most frightening 15 minutes in my life was waiting outside the delivery room by myself, where they were prepping Susie for an emergency C-section when our first child was born. Very, very scary.
6. I have flown several hours in helicopters, both military and civilian, scared to death the whole time. If you ever notice, there are not usually parachutes in a chopper...and I have seen auto-rotation totally fail.
7. One time on a mountain in Wyoming, a herd of about 100 antelope ran flat out, completely over and around both ends of my vehicle, and never touched it somehow.
8. During a bar-fight late one night, I told a very large, powerfully built drunken man to "put up or shut up" and get in my patrol car, as he kept telling me he was going to knock me out. He got in, and I took him to jail for drunk and disorderly. I later found out he was a current 5 time golden-gloves amateur boxing champion named "Smoke" Turner, and had never been beaten. There is a God...
9. When Susie went into premature labor with our second child, we were living in Jefferson City Missouri, and I was at Roaring River State Park, the extreme SW part of the state. I made it to the hospital in just under 1.5 hours...in my patrol car. Yes, lights and siren all the way, but you have to have your priorities.
10. While I lived in Kirksville Missouri, I bought a snowmobile, a very fast one, on the urging of a close friend, who told me it snowed a lot up there. The first winter, we had no snow at all, so we went to Yellowstone National Park and rode all over the park in December, one of the very best and most beautiful vacations I have ever had. My snowmobile would go about 100 mph. Zoom Zoom Zoom!
And yes, I am looking forward to the reunion too. I tag Billy Hollis, go Wild Billy! sbm
