A private family inurnment will be held in Czech National Cemetery.

John was born June 12, 1948, in Santa Monica, Calif., the son of John Wallace and Wanda Sue Curtis Lightfoot. He graduated from Washington High School in 1967. After attending Kirkwood Community College, John joined the United States Army, serving in Vietnam and being stationed in Germany and various posts throughout the United States. He married Cynthia Sue Feiereisen on April 11, 1970. John was discharged from the Army in 1971 and served in the Iowa National Guard until 1976. He worked for a short time at Link Belt / FMC in Cedar Rapids, before working as a safety officer at The Eastern Iowa Airport from 1975 until his retirement in 2003. After his retirement, John became a familiar face in the right tree line and sand traps of golf courses in Cedar Rapids and throughout Eastern Iowa.

John was the consummate family man. He dearly loved his wife, Cindy, and was all one could ask for in a father to his two children, Bethany and Jeff. He was a quiet and caring man who was always willing to help family and friends. Whether it meant lifting something to the rafters of the garage or helping someone through the death of a loved one, John and Cindy were both among the first to offer a hand or a shoulder. He became active in the Linn County Relay for Life after Cindy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2001. Together they sponsored the team “Cindy's Crusader.” John also served as a volunteer for Iowa's Senior Health Insurance Information Program helping seniors with their Medicare Supplement Insurance.

His happiest times after retirement came when spending time with and spoiling his three grandchildren who will all miss him very much.

John is survived by his children, Bethany (Dan) Daly of Waterloo and Jeff (Stephanie) Lightfoot of Springfield, Ill.; and grandchildren, Claire Daly, Elyse Lightfoot and Julia Lightfoot.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia; his brother-in-law, Richard; and his mother, Wanda Sue.
