I grew up with "Joey", both of us having attended Arthur grade school together. His family and mine have a connection to Whittier, Iowa. My father's family and Joey's grew up in what was then a predominately Quaker community. His relatives, like mine, came from a long line of Quakers. His father, Shelly, owned Hawkeye Express, a trucking company who did long hauls mostly to Chicago. Joey was a free spirit in school and loved to have a good time. Like some of us in grade school, recess was our favorite subject. His family owned a home two blocks from Arthur school off of 27th St. Their basement was replete with pinball machines, a disc bowling machine and a pool table. We spent a lot of time there for obvious reasons. I have not seen him since high school and I don't believe he ever showed up on our classmates site. My condolences to his family. His name evokes a lot of fond memories.

Joe’s family vacationed at my grandparents resort in northern Minnesota. His dad had one of the first “jet” boats in the late 1950s. I first met Joe there,we were in the same home room 7 thru 12. Sorry we didn’t get to talk of old times.

I didn't know Joe well, but I remember his great smile. I'm sending my warmest thoughts to Joe at this time of loss. It was great to read about his life. Thank you.

My thoughts and prayers also go to Joe's family. Like Dan Hampton I lived near Joe during our Franklin years and spent a lot of time in his basement, as well as, driving old fire trucks, and cars in parades throughout Eastern Iowa. I often reminisce those early years when looking back, life was so much simplier. R.I.P. Joe.

I hope my memory serves me correctly, but I think Joe's grandfather had a couple of steam powered tractors. I remember in the winter he would pull a trailer with a bunch of kinds on it around the city streets. I remember pulling out onto first avenue with his grandfather blowing the whistle. What an experience. Thank you Joe.
