Son of Andrew Moffett and Elizabeth ("Betty") Hall Moffett From The Daily Crescent of New Orleans, Wednesday, August 29, 1840: Death of Mr. Moffett of Charleston The Charleston Courier of the 23d informs us of the death of Andrew Moffett, a merchant of that place, under the following circumstance: Mr. Moffett, who has been in bad health for some time, was on a temporary visit to a daughter, residing on Sullivan's Island, with the hope that the invigorating sea breeze, and the salt water bath, would prove beneficial to an enfeebled constitution. He visited a bathing-house in the immediate vicinity of his daughter's residence, for the purpose of taking a bath, but having been absent a much longer period than usual, a servant was sent after him, who, having called him several times by name, and receiving no answer, the door was broken open, when Mr. Moffett was found on the steps of the bathing-house in the agonies of death, and expired in a few minutes. It is believed that in his feeble condition, he became exhausted while in the water, and was seized with cramps. He was a native of Scotland, but came to this country in early life, and has for upwards of forty years been engaged in mercantile pursuits in our city, where he has always borne the character of a just and upright merchant.
